What a letdown

Two evenly matched teams. Could have been a classic. Shame the refs had to muck it up.

    How so?

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Seattle did their own share of mucking it up. Horrible clock management.
  • Oh, I don't know. Maybe the phantom holding penalties that repeatedly killed Seattle's drives. No, wait, it was Rothlisberger TD that didn't touch the line.

The officiating clearly had a Pittsburgh bias.

come on now. Seattle mis managed the clock big time at the end of the first half and did no better in the 4th quater. The Steelers whooped their a$$e$

I thought the 2nd half was more enjoyable to watch.

Roth. could've been the goat in this game!

    Congratulations Pitt fans!!!

This was not the SB I was expecting tho.

I agree the calls went Pitt's way but it looked like the Roeth td did touch the line, plus 4th and inch they probably would of scored the td anyway.

Steve, you're one of the best posters on this site, so please don't play stupid. It's not your style.

To remind you, Pittsburg up 14-10, Seattle driving, pass by Hasselbeck to the Pittsburgh 1, first and goal with the NFL ALL TIME SINGLE SEASON TOUCHDOWN LEADER IN THE BACKFIELD, and a bad holding call turns it all around. Not bad by my words, Hall of Fame announcer and coach John Madden can't see it either. Instead of a 17-14 lead, Pittsburgh (to their credit I might add) drives down and puts the game away. But with a call like that, one can only wonder.

That call was as close as a call can get. Watching the replay 5 times was not enough to be sure. Crying about that call is just sour fu$king grapes

  • Uh, sure they did. They were lucky to not be in a 14-0 hole after the first quarter.

Congrats to Pittsburgh, but either team could have easily won tonight. But officials repeatedly killed Seattle's drives with their officiating. Even Michaels and Madden were having a hard time finding the penalties on the replay.

Sure we have, all teams have. But on the biggest of stages you would expect the officiating to be more even-handed.

I could give two shats who won, but as a football fan, it could have been a classic.

  • That's because of the camera angles and what is shown on TV, we all don't get to actually see what may be happening.

yeah well from where he sits what can he see?

the refs are part of the game,

I have played in over 1000 games in my life and have seen it all. I have never blamed an umpire for blowing a game.

cmon the better team won. (the better team at least today) these 2 teams play tomorrow or yesterday and the outcome could be different.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • No one was calling this SB a classic, all I heard anyone saying is that it was going to be a boring superbowl because no one really cares except for the fans of both teams.

The officiating wasn't great, but it wasn't the difference either.

There were moments in the game where it seemed like the energy level was about to go up a level, but it didn't really last. I'll agree with the "letdown" assessment in that regard.

After all of the crying and whining simmers down this Steeler team will be remembered forever more for the TOUGH road it took to a Super Bowl Championship image

  • If you didn't see the poor officiating, nothing I say will change will say change your mind.

At best it was poor, at worse it was biased.

I am happy that despite the calls (that could have gone either way), the Steelers made the plays to win the game.

The Seahawks simply did not. They looked terrible at the end of each half, too - when it counted the most.

The first TD by Pitt was a tough call, but it turns out it wasn't the deciding factor.

There's always gonna be someone upset about the outcome of a game.

Interceptions, IMO, played a larger role in deciding the outcome than the refs.

The calls may go both ways.

I also think the extra week hurts the potential "energy" of the game.

Bad calls, missed opportunities, missed catches, interceptions, etc. are all part of the fabric of the game.

There will always be next year. And I still have to work tomorrow! image

So, my empathy with the Seattle fans and a sentimental congrats to Pitt fans.

Oh, and lastly, I ate too much!!!

  • Pitt was flat to start the game and did nothing in the first quarter. Seattle came out and was successfully moving the ball.

Darrell Jackson called for pass int on Seattle's first TD. I've seen far worse not called. Even Madden was baffled.
Jeremy Stevens (who sucks) catches ball inside Pitt 5 but holding brings it back. Madden/Michaels unable to find the holding. Following play Hasselbeck is sacked on helmet to helmet that is not called.
Peter Warrick punt returned called back by phantom holding call.
Pitt intercepts the ball, and Hasselbeck is call for a cut block for tackling the defender. How do you cut block while tackling someone?
Pittsburgh was called for 3 penalties, and 2 of those came on their first drive.

Madden and Michaels are surrounded by monitors, and also have spotters, and were unable to find some of the drive-killing penalties called on Seattle.

LIke I said, I could care less who won, but officiating was very poor, and at worst, biased.

Maybe, since I know a horse collar tackle when I see it, Joey Porter.

I also know when a QB calls a TO after the play clock runs out as well.

I couldn't do any worse, and this was an All-Star crew.

I wasn't at the game, was rooting for the Steelers and the Bus (a Notre Dame grad) and could see the officiating was awful.

Madden and Michaels can't find the hold that overturns what would have been the go ahead touchdown.

The guys on espn are laughing and joking about the phantom "push off" on Darrell Jackson's touchdown.

From a Colts fan who really didn't care about the outcome, that was absolutely terrible.

That's really kinda true about any sporting event. If your not a fan of one of the teams, then you probably don't care of the outcome. I could really give two $hits about the Patriots the last few years.

As for the officiating, give it a break. The Roth TD was a TD. The ball was clearly (in my opinion) above the white line. The holding call could have gone either way. Seahawks fans complain because it was a huge loss of yardage. If it brought back a 3 yard pass instead of a 25 yard pass, then nobody would complain. Don't cheapen it for a team that has beat the BEST in the NFL to get there. And when I say best, I'm including the Seahawks in that, they are a great team this year.
  • The Seahawks inexperience in big games was evident. Horrible clock management at the end of both halfs.

I'm looking at the box score now. They had more first downs, more net yards, a superior passing game...but penalties killed them, losing 70 yards, compared to 20 for pittsburgh.

You figure in a Superbowl, they've got the most cameras possible in a pro football game, yet Michaels and Madden were dumbstruck over some of these phantom calls.

    A tough loss for sure.

The promos for that new ABC comedy were just obnoxious. Jokes about sex, jews and hitler on a sunday afternoon? How embarrassing if you had small kids over.

The most disappointing thing about the game was the commercials and the half-time show. None of the ads were really great. Burger King went all whack-job with the dancing burger, Gilette wants to double my chances of cutting myself with a 6 blade razor... Ameriquest had funny ads, but how they tie with Ameriquest is a mystery to me. Hummer took the cake for the biggest waste of an ad. And whoever did those Diet Pepsi ads should lose their job... they were both terrible. The Fed Ex ad was cute, the Escalade ad was excellent and the rest were all nothing notable.

The Stones have clearly lost the ability to make the supurb music they made in the past. It was a very unexciting show.

The game itself I thought was fine. Sloppy play at times by both teams, but still a good game to watch.

How could you miss it. The TD by Jackson, pushoff my arse. I saw illegal contact all game on Pitt where was that. Then the Holding calls that brought the ball back, once from the 1 yard line. I dont think the Ben TD could be reversed though.

Shoulda been a Seahawks win, period.

They crapped themselves, why wasnt Mike Carey in this game, he is the only ref worth a c hit.

He pushed off, period. He doesn't need to push the defender down. He put his hand on the defender and extended it as he seperated. Maybe the officials ignore it more times than not but it is a foul by the book.
