Peeping Tom arrived

This one finally arrived:

Warks 312

Excellent bronzed proof, only 48 struck. This is truly an amazing and important token with superb bronzing and a razor-sharp strike. Please note Tom the tailor peeping out the third floor niche, as he was preparing to gaze upon the naked Lady Godiva on her famous ride through Coventry in 1067. Poor chap; it would be the last thing he would ever see. Thomas Sharp, the manufacturor of this wonderful private token, was said to be born in the very same room in 1770.

They had awfully Georgian-looking buildings in Coventry in 1057, didn't they? image

That's a gorgeous copper, even without the BBL on it.

We don't count the ground floor as first over here. These buldings have two floors unless I'm blind. image

That's the way it is in this hotel, which was done all in English style.

It has four floors: the basement (a rarity in these parts, due to the low water table), the ground floor, the first floor, and the second floor. Our first floor is really the second floor in the American way of looking at it, and the second floor would be the third. It confuses some new employees.

This is my last weekend here at The Lodge At Sea Island Golf Club. I'm a lame duck, now. I will be working for our sister resort, The Cloister, after next week's vacation.

Now that Dimitri brought up the floor-counting issue, I'm curious as to how many people/countries/cultures count in that "weird" way that the French (and apparantly, the Greeks and the Poles) do. As I recall, German-speaking countries count normally, that is, the first floor is floor number 1. That's what I remember in Britain as well, so I'm surprised that LordMinivan says his hotel uses the "weird" way of counting. I can't remember that the floor counting was different in Korea or Japan either (except in Korea they omit the fourth floor because it's considered bad luck).

Fantastic token, Cosmic. Can you tell us more about the story of Naked Lady Godiva and what happened to the peeping Tom?
