1840 gold $2.50 whats wrong?

Well, it looks like it was used in jewelry becasue of the solder spot but, why is one star missing/very weakly struck? It doesn't seem to be a filled hole. Thoughts? I picked it up for a fair price considering its mintage of just over 18k,

I agree. That's probably not a solder spot, but rather the spot where the metal was poured into a cast mold.

I have to agree with the others. The lettering and devices seem a little too mushy and indistinct, even considering that it's well-worn. Here's an 1847 for comparison (IMO undergraded by PCGS as an EF45):
