That is a very nice Claude Raymond card. I can tell you with 100% certainty that card is by far the toughest card in the '71 set. It is impossible to find 8s for this card, let alone a 9.

If I recall correctly, many moons ago #743 JOHN ODONOGHUE was considered one of the toughest if not THE toughest. Maybe it was, and the ensuing submittal money chased it back into the 'just tough' category.
Not sure if anyone is left on this thread, but wondering if anyone could help me with the checklist variations from this year. Specifically card #'s 206,369 and 619. According to the registry, there are 2 variations of # 206 and 3 variations of 369 and 619. Below are the scans of the cards I have.
For #206, There are two variations a red helmet and orange helmet. These variation descriptions on my cards show Red helmet and Orange helmet. I have been told once or twice that I'm color blind, but they look the same to me. Is one of these mislabeled or am I missing something? For #369, I assume these are correctly labeled and both helmets look red and I see a line on one and a no line on another, I assume I'm just missing the orange helmet version (which I cant seem to tell what it looks like) For #619, There are three variations, a no copyright, a copyright - no wavy line and a copyright - wavy line. The one I have labeled no copyright does not have a copyright line on the back, so it looks correct to me. For the other one that I have copyright, no wavy line, is it labeled properly?
I cant seem to find enough of these on ebay to make sure I know which is labeled properly and know what I'm looking at. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Collecting '52-'54 in PSA 7, '55 to '67 in PSA 8, '68 to '79 in PSA 9. See me on the set registry as GI's XXXX Set. Thx.
Blondmoment- I think people are reading your question but there have been no responses becauseI'm not sure people know the answer. I am and have been for years an avid 71 collector, but frankly, I'm not sure what is the difference between an orange helmet and a red helmet checklist. I also have one of each that I can't tell the difference (that is- one of each as labeled by PSA). I'm just not sure about this so-called variation. There are checklist variations as to line/no line, and copyright/no copyright- I suspect PSA has not been as diligent as possible in labeling these variations and there may be mislabeled or nonlabeled variations. I think if you are interested in finding all these variations, you just need to look closely at the card and not depend on the PSA labels.
Just my 2 cents. Rob

I suspect the difference is simply one of missing yellow print dots in the helmet, similar to the 'brown/grey bat' checklists in the 1970 set. Close inspection under a loupe should show it clearly.

mrtrentd- Welcome to the boards. You've chosen a tough set to start to collect. This thread has been quiet lately. There was a time that some very active members were pursuing this set, and have since completed it (like myself). Post questions and document your progress in this thread. Also, contact some of the other guys who have posted. They might have dupes they are willing to sell. This'll help build your set and resurrect this thread.
Congrats on #96 already! Again welcome to the boards.
I am working on this set as well, but doing it raw in NM or better. I have about 130 cards so far and looking for anyone who might have some nice NM raw they would sell in a lot.
This is the card that got me into collecting. Long story short. I lost my brothers 71 McCovey in 5th grade at school this was many many moons ago. About a year ago out of the blue I checked Ebay to see if I could Find one like it. Ayways I been hooked ever since.I never knew about graded cards. Love them.

In the SCM Forum, I posted a thread the other day titled "1971 Topps baseball is getting hammered!" I was expressing my puzzlement over the latest Apple's eBay auction, which netted a lot of low, low prices for 71's.
Man. From most of the responses, you'd think we were all throwing our money down the nearest sewer.
Thought I'd respond to this post, after all, I was the seller of the set. I was not expecting much from any of the high pop cards I listed, and I got about what I though I would. I estimated bringing in about $14K total, actually did a little better than that. There has been a flood of the more common 71's lately, bringing the price down pretty low. Even some of the high numbers have been down lately as well, I would say because of some of the bigger 71 collectors already having their want lists filled. But the star cards still brought good money, as did a lot of the lower pop cards. Yes, the days of getting $100 for Andy Etchebarren or Frank Bertaina are long gone, but there are still several cards that still do well because of their scarcity in an 8 or above. I have found in all of my PSA set breaks that the easier higher pop cards are down in price and value, but I have not seen a drop in the other cards prices.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo. ~WalterSobchak
Dave...I hope it didn't come across that I was criticizing you, in either of these forums. You are one of the top seller's in the business, with whom I've had many, many positive, wonderful transactions.
If anything, I was feeling sorry for you!
It was the comments from the gallery that astounded me, in their cynical, negative tone toward PSA Registry sets.
First. Dave is an excellent seller. Second, it helps to sell when the market is hot. Dave sold another 71 set in early 2009 or very late 2008, and did very well. His sale drove me to break my complete 71 set in March/April of 2009. There were some big spenders at the time, and I did very well both on Ebay and through some private offers I couldn't refuse. Third, with this economy, many "fringe" buyers have closed shop, but will very likely return when things turn around. Fourth, the pops are always going up. Collect what you like, and enjoy what you have. The 71's are one great set.
And with that note I moved up to 86 on the list lol. I bought five 8s from apples auction.Really wanted the Vida Blue.I dont see psa blues that often. Anyways nice to see some chatter on the 71 black beauties.

Didn't take your comments as criticism at all. Just wanted to say even with some low prices on many cards I did OK. Not like the last two 71 set breaks I did, but still OK. Actually as the prices of some of these commons comes down, so does the selling prices of the sets I buy. As far as the 71's go, I think Joe O. told me that year card gets submitted more than any other year. So there are a lot of them in the population now. The market for the 8.5's and 9's should stay pretty steady as well.
Mrtrentd, congrats on moving up the ladder a bit. That Blue turns up pretty often, be patient.

Tks bbuckner 22. I mentioned in a earlier post how and why i started collecting.I was just thinking how times have changed. My first packs that I bought as a little kid were the 1971 packs. Nothing like getting your favorite player or player from your favorite team.It was simply open the pack and you knew what you had............... I see today( watching videos on youtube) its all about the chrome gold silver metiliac refractor multi autograph dual jersey bat first seris 1-1 diamiond overlay baseball card. Ok being sarcastic but really it was simple back then.I have some newer cards that look great and I like and I guess thats all that matters. Chris

Chris, Same for me, 71 was the year I first starting buying cards as a kid. I don't remember being able to buy cello's or rack packs, do recall the 10 cent 10 cards packs. I think it was Sonny Siebert who I couldn't get no matter how many packs I bought. Would love to be able to go back and see how badly all of those cards were centered, something you never seemed to notice as kid.

I remember going to Woolworth's were they had hundreds of racks hanging up and shelves of cellos in the individual boxes. I wish I could go back in time.
I currently have the #23 set on the registry (JMacs 1971 baseball). When I finished it a few years ago it was up to #19 or so. Some sets dropped out and some have passed me out, but from #19 to #23 over 2 years is understandable. Of all the 1971 collectors, does anyone remember cjcardboardtrust ... I believe his name was Mike. He was all the way up to #3 or 4 and was the one who really helped me complete my set. Then all of a sudden his set was off the registry. Guess I'd like to know why an avid set collector gets all the way towards the top, then is gone?
Love the 1971 set .... not enough good rookies in it though.
As others, I collected them as a boy and now have added to it.
In the years 2000-2002, I was lucky enough to hook up with a guy in Indiana and we would go through my 1970/71 want list card-by-card. He sent me perfect-a-mundo blast black 71's. Of course, most were in the lower numbers.
He filled what he could. After that, we started the 1972 set, but I think he died or something, because suddenly, I never heard from him again. In one of his emails, he said that he had almost 1 million dollars worth of cards (if he could sell them for SMR prices)
That is arguably the toughest card in the set, so I'm not surprised with that auction result. I listed my 9 for $5k. It didn't sell but I did end up trading it for $5k worth of cards.
I just stumbled upon this thread and spent the last half hour or so reading through it, it is amazing how much you can learn about a set when reading through something like this! I have recently started building a raw '71 set and info like this is great. Although it is a little disheartening to think about how you could purchase 71's and it turn out that they have been cut or the edges have been colored in to alter the appearance. Things like that have been pushing me to the consideration of collecting a psa graded set instead. Either way, this is a beautiful set and I guess you gotta just take the good with the bad when it comes to things like this.
Welcome to the new 71 posters such as myself. Im making good progress Im now 84 on the 1971 registry list. With a set that big its hard to keep track of what I have. I just a paper that I update trying not to get duplicates but kinda hard when buying lots.

Hi, I've been out of the card collecting game for the past year or so because I've really been focused on classic video games (I tend to rotate between those two hobbies every few years it seems); have the PSA 7's of the below 1971's that I need gotten a little cheaper (I hope)? I had to sell my Mays, Rose, and Clemente several months back to help start my NES/SNES collection; hopefully I can get them back for a bit less now or a little later? After all, the supply of 7's can only increase over time and they're much more affordable than the more popular 8's/9's.
No pictures and opening minimum bids that are too high. Recipe for disaster.

I was looking through some of my '71's today and ran across this one. In between the "R" and "O" in ROOKIE STARS, you cant miss it. I have not seen a print dot that looks like this one. It almost appears as if there is an extra "O" there. Has anyone seen any similar to this?
