I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some advice on these 1971 cards. A guy a work offered to sell me 119 raw 1971 cards. He wants me to make him an offer. I took a look at them and if I were to get them graded they would average out to be a PSA 7. Some would come back 6's and some 8's. There are no major stars in the lot and most are commons, but there are some semi-stars like Catfish Hunter and Willie McCovey. I know this is not much info to go by, but what would be a fair offer? Are there people out there still actively collecting this set because I notice this thread is not getting much play? I would get most of them graded and probably sell them hoping to make a little money. Any imput would be appreciated.
Thanks, Mark >>
Unless you can get them for next to nothing I wouldnt bother. Too many issues with 71 cards. Nearly all commons grading a 6 or 7 wont get your grading fees back, and even alot of 8's barely cover grading cost now. Add in the fact that so many raw cards are recolored it just isnt worth it, especially if you think beforehand most wouldnt have a shot at an 8.
Lots like the one you mention can be had for around $10-15 these days.

I have a question re a 1971 variation. I fell into collecting this set almost by accident, and I have not put much research into it (other than checking the low pops). I had some grades post yesterday, and one of them is #306 Nash-Blob Airbrushed away. It is one of two in 8. What is the story in this card? I am not much interested in variations and would be willing to cash it in if it has any significant value.
I finally got a 1971 Topps Rollie Fingers in a PSA 8. They always seem to go for well over $100 since it is a low pop in high grade. I couldn't believe I was so fortunate to find one in a "buy it now" for only $32.99 (item 320051555146).
I have a complete 1971 set with half of the set graded 8 (PSA,SGC,BVG) the other half is raw and Near Mint. I have other interests as well so I upgrade my set sporadically. I'm still looking for a 1971 Joe Morgan in a psa 8 that is centered well.
Redlegs - Do you have extra '71's to trade? I have the following PSA 8's (#459, 499, 603, 620, 629, and 699) as well as close to 100 PSA 7's if you want to trade. lmk, Bill.

Doesn't seem to be a lot of activity on this thread, but I wanted to let anyone interested know that I have a 71 PSA-7 Baker/Baylor rookie up on ebay right now (ending Monday). Warning, I had to put a reserve on this for fear of someone comming in at the last minute and stealing it for $10. But, the reserve price is ~30% lower than the SMR value, which I figured was pretty fair.

All- I actually posted this on the buying board and I appologize if this isn't the proper theard for this. Looking to buy any raw commons that you might have that didn't quite make the grade to submit to PSA? The 1971 and 1972 sets intrigue me so Im looking to to put a raw set together. Looking for condition that would have probably yield a "5" or "6" in ex condition. Please email me @ rich at oldsargessports dot com with what you have and what you are looking for as far as price goes.
Hi everyone, I'm probably at least a few years away from truely belonging here, but I do have a few questions. First off, I've heard from several about "so many graded cards showing up, lowering the price/value"; is that true for raw sets as well? Of course, I'll first need to get 1972-75 sets before I can worry about 1971 but nevertheless it is one of my all time favorite sets (almost as nice design as 1975), but my main concern is what condition I can afford. As it stands now, I'd be very lucky to get around EX-EXMTish raw set (and even that can be several hundred to $1000; there's a set like that at BBCE that's exactly a grand) in a few years (even $450-$500 for 1975 and $300-$325 for 1974 in raw NRMT/MT is still quite a big purchase at the moment), but nevertheless, I do want to try to extend my Topps set run as far back as possible.
Also, is it true that this set's beauty doesn't truely shine unless the cards are in super duper nice condition, and that fact is much more so than in other sets? And lastly, what's the best way of making sure the raw cards have not been recolored (which is the main "forgery" issue with this set)?
Black light will show most recoloring jobs. I have heard with the proper use of model paint, the black light test is not fool proof. Closely examing the edges for any blacks spots is something that should also be done to detect recolor.
The black light sounds like an excellent idea. Hopefully very very few people bothered with that whole paint stuff. Also to my other question, is it true that the set's beauty doesn't really show unless it's in top notch condition, and that that's even more so than as typically would be the case with other sets?
Do not know why there is not much activity here? but to answer your question of over a month ago!.......just got here myself.....anyway...YES ..that set gets more radiant the nicer it gets!!...And I believe much more so than other sets!.........
Here's EX:..............................picture an older grey car w/ a few chips around the edges...a little paint flecking off...OK..then picture that same car nice & clean & shiney....OK......a little improvement...right.................NOW.....picture a dull black ,older car w/paint chipping off the edges & a dull hue!............................................NOW!!!!.....PICTURE A BRAND SPANKIN' SHINEY NEW JET BLACK MUSTANG THAT'S SPARKLING IN THE SUN AFTER A WAX AND BUFF JOB.......................THERE YOU HAVE IT!!!
Like I said, I'm a big fan of 1971's and though it'll be quite awhile before I can start my own set (probably in EXMT range), it's one of my favorites and thus this topic deserves a bump.
I got a question for all you veteran 1971 collectors. I also hope someday to "take the plunge" on this set (after I'm done with 1973-79), maybe sometime next year if I'm lucky. Now, I should have no trouble doing 1973-79 in NRMT or better condition with the key cards in PSA 7 (in terms of making the set nice but affordable at the same time), but I'm not sure what to do regarding 1970-72, as that is where you start getting the sets up to four figures in book value. My question is this; what would the price difference be between a 1971 NRMT set with the key cards in PSA 7 versus an EXMT set with the key cards in PSA 6?
How frequent is size variations in this set? I just picked up a slabbed 71 that looks kinda skinny l/r. When compared to some other 71s I've got, it's smaller.
BTW, while we're on the subject of my second favorite 1970s set (1975 is #1), I want to give a shout out to jeff8877 for helping get about halfway through on the PSA 7 cards I needed! With his help (and six C-notes in return), I was able to get Willie, Robbie, Reggie, Johnny, Aaron, Ernie (no, I didn't buy two), Frank Robinson, Tom Seaver, Blyleven RC, about half the checklists, and other minor HOFers. Plus he's about to give me a start on my 1972 set with three PSA 7's from there.
I just picked up (2) #306 Jim Nash with Black Blob that I am getting ready to send to PSA, I feel like they should both grade 8. Has anyone ever seen one bid or know what kind of price they should command? With only 17 total ever graded I would think they would be worth more than the $16 in the SMR?
I'm still working on this set (as well as 1972 and the 1974-77 cards listed below) if anyone has some PSA 7 NQs of HOFers or checklists looking for a good home. Basically I'm trying to get all the HOFers (not counting most subset cards) and all the checklists graded and do the rest of the set raw. That comes out to about 60-65 graded cards and I'm about halfway there so far.
EDIT: Here's what I'm missing:

I agree with your assessments. They grade Munsons tough. The only way that card is worth the $ is if it is a PSA 8 or higher. I had one with very similar centering recently and it came back a 7. This card also has the diamond cut, so I think it's a PSA 7, 7.5 at best. PSA 7s sell for around $180. Not a good buy, IMO.
I purchased Frank's 71 Topps set from him and I just wanted to let you know that I have put every card for sale on eBay. Please go to this following link to see the cards if you are interested: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Cardboard-Classics-LLC
Shipping is free no matter how many cards you buy.
Also, I have had the set up for a few days and already 35% of it has sold, therefore I think pricing is close to where it should be for most of the cards.
Lastly, I had no problems with this big purchase with Frank. I spoke to him about the set briefly on the phone and everything went well. He packaged the cards well and they arrived when he said they would. He was very prompt with giving details of receiving payment and providing shipping tracking #'s. I would deal with Frank in the future whether it was a $10 transaction or a $50,000 transaction. Thanks Frank!
I went to look, and before I got away I was $500 poorer. I had better not go back. I thought some of the stars (Rose and Jackson) were priced a little high, as were some of the low pops. Plenty of cards, though, were close to VCP. Good luck with the rest of it.
This is a great set in high grade, But it will drive you crazy to say the least. I am working on a raw set but am a long way off. I'm always looking for nice 71's.
This thread hasn't been bumped for awhile, but I saw this on ebay and figured it would be worth a bump:

504.99! >>
Amazing! Not only is the scan on the small side, the card either has a diamond cut or the bottom edge has been trimmed. >>
Waverly82 always gets good money for his raw, but my experiences aren't good. The star cards from a NMMT-MT 1976T baseball set I bought from him years ago were definitely fillers. Also bought some raw from him and was very disappointed. His return policy is very good, but I think in his business model he relies too heavily on it, meaning he puts up with the high potential for refunds. I returned both purchases.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Amazing! Not only is the scan on the small side, the card either has a
diamond cut or the bottom edge has been trimmed.
I am working on a raw set but am a long way off. I'm always looking for nice 71's.
PM if interested.
Thanks for looking.

Card does look trimmed. If not, then i would say its an 8.

Will never deal with him again.
