Soccer Sets

As one of the few voices in the wilderness preaching the gospel of the Beautiful Game, I am going to be sending in my first set of pre-war English football cards for grading, then plan to get them up on the registry. These little beauties are in incredible condition. There are a few other nice sets (Ardath, Churchman) from around the same period, but these are my faves. I'm lucky to have them in such nice condition, as the backs were adhesive and meant to be glued in an album.

  • Well Done Matt

Good luck in your quest to spread the word about the beautiful game! I have loads of football (soccer!) sets so if you would like to know what any look like before you get some more let me know and i will see if i can post a scan.

Im thinking of sending in a few of my CRICKET cards to be graded. Now they really will blow the PSA guys away!! image

  • Thanks Martin. Good to see that I'm not the only one. The almost complete absence of soccer card sets in the registry is a little surprising. I really love the look of some of those cricket sets, though I have to admit that I struggle to get my head around the rules of the game. An American friend of mine who is now living in London has become a massive cricket fan, but I think that's becuase he was out of work for a long time and had plenty of free hours to spend in front of the TV. image

  • I've been looking for some reasonable quality pre-WWII soccer sets. My favourites are the Caricatures by MAC and Caricatures by RIP sets from the late 1920's. But these seem to be hard to come by in anything better than VG condition. That card in your pic looks like it should grade at least an 8. Nice pickup!

Cool cards! I've been thinking about purchasing a vintage football set and maybe even looking into what's out there on the modern front - one of these days maybe.

  • Well, look what showed up in the mail! I was waiting so long for these to arrive from the UK that I forgot I had bought them image

This is a Chinese set of 48 cards entitled "Hints on Association Football" released in 1934 by the British American Tobacco Co.

  • Cool cards. I think there may be an equivalent set with text in English from around the same period. Finding good images of some these early English football issues is no easy thing.

  • I'm working on this set from 1910 as well, by Gallaher. Rare as hen's teeth, especially in decent condition, but there are a few up on eBay at the moment...

  • I decided to send a few of these early Gallahers in for grading first, since I have a free grading voucher burning a hole in my pocket. I love the colors and quality of the illustrations. They are somewhat more rare and harder to locate in decent condition than the other early soccer sets I own, so it's a good place to start. The first batch will be from teams that are currently in the English Premier League, then I'll probably do a bulk submission later in the year. I expect to get these up on the registry at some point, and hopefully get soccer fans more involved in grading/sharing their sets...

Sweet cards all the way around....I have a few sheets of old soccer cards laying around that I brought home from my families in Ireland a few yrs back, I will have to dig them out and see what I have.

If anyone has any soccer (football) cards portraying any Irish players, particularly for the national team, but even irish born but playing for MU or something, I would be interested.

Those cricket cards are something I have never come across before.......great sport if you have 3 or 4 days with nothing to do ! Years ago one of my professors and advisors in college was caribbean born, and was a world class cricket player in his day.....I joined him a couple of times in local games.....he had me "bowling", or the equivalent of pitching as we know it.......fun, but the games NEVER end.

I'm still a week or two away from setting it up, but if any of you footy fans want to get in a Premier League fantasy league, lemme know here or via PM and I can send you the details once I get it going.

And once again, great stuff, Matt.

  • Thanks all. It's been fun putting it together. I had a few rejected as miscut, etc., but I think it's a bit the nature of the set - lots of color variances and weird cuts.

yawie, are you doing the Premier League fantasy game? I already have a team set up and would be happy to add your league, if you don't have an objection to letting a Chelsea fan in. Let me know the code when you get a chance. Thanks.

Cool. I'll send you the info once it's rolling, Matt. Not sure if my cousin or I will be the official commish but I'll definitely get you the details once the league's up - even if you are a fan of the soon-to-be-dethroned Blues.

  • Thanks. BTW, I watched the Bergkamp testimonial and the new stadium looks beautiful. I'm glad I was able to see a match at Highbury before it closed, though (Arsenal 2 Chelsea 2 in 2004). What a great old ground.

Awesome, man. I totally want to visit England to see a match. I've never even been to Europe. Hopefully I muster the courage to fly there one of these days. It was bad enough pre-9/11 but now I have even less of a desire to board a plane. I think I've only flown once since the summer of '01 and that was to see Phish at Madison Square Garden on NYE '02/03. It's probably going to take that kind of event for me to even consider flying.

  • You've gotta go. It really adds another dimension to the game - the pre- and post-match pints, the chants, the atmosphere in the stadiums - just awesome. Well worth a trip. Every time I go over, I try to see matches at a few of the other grounds. I've only gone to London grounds so far - Stamford Bridge (twice), Highbury, Selhurst Park, Upton Park and Craven Cottage - but hope I can get a bit further afield next time.

Incredible cards gentlemen. It's nice to finally see soccer get some love on these boards. I own my own soccer business, and recently we've had a few young kids coming in and asking us for packs of soccer cards. Any ideas of current product thats out there and if any of it is quality?
  • I'm not currently collecting any new stuff, but I know it's out there. What are they looking for - MLS or European?

Is there anyone here who was a fan of the ORIGINAL Major Indoor Soccer League?

I used to go to alot of NY Arrows games when I was a kid. They were great, and the Arrows were dominating with Steve Zungel scoring at will and Shep Messing in goal. Indoor soccer seemed to be so much better back then, but maybe its just fond childhood memories that make me think that.

As for going to games in Europe, all I have gone to so far is games in Ireland, but next time I am over my cousins and I are going to try to take a trip over to a Man United game. They go all the time and constantly talk about what a great time it is.

Hell yeah. For a brief stretch the Steamers were more popular than the Blues. Those were great times. Now that I think about it, I hope my parents haven't thrown out one of my prized childhood possessions: a plastic Ovaltine mug with the logos of all the MISL teams. I don't know why, but I've always loved logos and the MISL had some good ones. My friend Mike and I used to write the teams all the time looking for free stickers and schedules and stuff. I was so jealous of his older brother Hank who also had all the MISL and NASL pennants hanging in his room.

Matt, I'll be sending you an invite a sec via the e-mail addy you have listed on your profile. Brian, I don't have your e-mail address; I'm not sure if I'll need it for an invite or if I'll be able to just forward you the links/info later. I think the latter will be OK, but stay tuned.

I'm an Anglophile. I've been twice. Once the summer after HS, spent 3 weeks travelling through England and Scotland. London was awesome, Bath was awesome, Edinburgh was awesome, Glasgow was all rainy and grey and not much fun. Then I spent a semester in college in London, which was nice because I was an English major. Unfortunately, the poetry course I was so looking forward to was taught by a complete dunce, and we spent most of our time reading Robert Frost. Nice stuff, of course, but man, we're in England. You know, Shakespeare, Blake, Yeats, Keats, at least a little bit? Historical and school stuff aside, one of the most fun things was going to football matches. A couple friends and I went to a Tottenham Hotspur/Arsenal match at Arsenal. From what I gather, it was about on par with a Yanks/Red Sox game, except they don't play each other 19 times a year. It was insane. Anyway, I can't believe it's been almost 15 years since I've been. Gotta get back. Now that they've listed the 6-month quarantine period on dogs, I may look into moving there.

I went to about 10 Wichita Wings home games back in the early 80s.

It's too bad, but I used to have some interesting Wings attire, such as an orange silk jacket and a cool set of wrist sweat bands. Can't forget the Wings pennant I used to also have.

I was playing AYSO back then, so it was pretty cool to me.
Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001
  • I used to go to a lot of MISL games in San Diego. the Sockers used to be pretty dominating for a few years. I remember going to NASL games at Jack Murphy Stadium in 1980. My whole family was really into soccer back then. I still collect a little on the side.

I remember that. I grew up in Webster Groves, and in the early 80's the Steamers were the BOMB. I'd agree that they were more popular than Liut and the Sutters. I even remember having a poster of a Steamers star on my bedroom wall (a black guy who's name escapes me).

YES! That was his name. Didn't they play at Kiel? Wherever it was, I remember going to games and the arena was just packed. Whoever said soccer couldn't make it in the US didn't attend those Steamer games in the early '80's, because those fans were rabid and there were a lot of them.
  • yawie99yawie99 Posts: 2,575 ✭✭✭
It was probably the Checkerdome during the Steamers' heyday. It went back to being the St. Louis Arena when Ralston Purina sold the Blues and the building. That was a great, old barn. Now we have lame Savvis Center, which started out as the new Kiel Center (not be confused with the old Kiel Auditorium). Actually, I think Savvis went under and now there's some equally unheard of corporate sponsor of the building.

God, that's right-- the Checkerdome. I'd completely forgotten about that place. Thanks, yawie, for the trip down memory lane. It's amazing (and humbling) to consider all the stuff you've forgotten that was once so important to you.

Does anyone here happen to have any MISL GAMES on VHS?? I've been fortunate to amass about 60 or so games from all years and all teams- including some classic Wichita Wings/St.Louis Steamers games. That rivalry wasn't friendly. It was based on bad blood.

Yes, I remember the big Wings/Steamers rivalry. I hated the Steamers.
Does anyone remember when Slobo from the Steamers wore a cast for a long time on one arm? I was convinced it was so he could inflict damage on the Wings players.
Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001
  • yawie99yawie99 Posts: 2,575 ✭✭✭
Slobo was awesome! I was at a game against the LA Lazers, I believe, when he was credited with a goal. He heaved it downfield and it took a crazy hop up over the opposing goalie's head. I doubt that he was the first or only goalie to "score" but it was still pretty cool.

  • RedHeart54RedHeart54 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭
Actually, Tony Bellinger was the one known for wearing that damn cast all the time. (A "soft" cast.) He wasn't as dirty as guys like Don Ebert and Steve Pecher, though. Funny that Slobo was always wandering away from the net in search of a goal. In a game in 1985, Jan Olesen, goalie of the of the Wings, put on a dribbling exhibition down the length of the field and put it right through Slobo's legs. I was at the game and remember it like yesterday (and luckily I have it on VHS).

I thought I'd open this thread again whatwith David Beckham's pending arrival.

I couldn't resist: I just bought his 1997 Upper Deck rookie card for $22. It's a very attractive card from what I assume is a relatively hard-to-find set. More hype than substance? Probably. Still...

Brilliant resuscitation, Michael! And only fitting that you'd be the one to do it.

I say this not because of the impending arrival of Posh and Becks (a fading star who's joining what's not even a second-class league, despite the ludicrous pronouncements of Alexi Lalas) but because the 2007-08 English Premier League kicks off in less than a month. Fantasy leagues are now available on the EPL website and I'll again be setting one up. And hopefully reclaiming the hardware from Matt, who just destroyed everybody last year, I believe.

Anyway, if any of you guys want in the league, PM with your e-mail addy and I'll either e-mail you an invite or just give you the league name and password.

Has anyone seen what the 2008 MLS Upper Deck set will look like? They're due to be released 9/2 but I haven't seen a sample yet.
