....I'm not greedy. I sent 2 in march, then 2 again a couple of weeks ago, and they both came back yesterday. Kinda makes me wonder if he signed them to keep me from sending more or mere coincidence, as this has happened with several players????
The Staubach was in the first batch of cards I sent out back in January. After waiting 4 1/2 months and getting nothing back I sent him out two more cards towards the end of May. Well earlier this week I go to my PO Box and there are two padded mailers waiting. I open the first one and it's the two cards I sent to him in May. They were both unsigned so I was bummed out. Then I went and opened the other one and it was the Staubach I sent back in January and that one was signed! I guess sending him the second package got him motivated to sign the first card I sent 6 months ago.
<< <i>Nice job on the Earl Campbell! Still waiting for something from him. >>
I know this was an old post but wondering if you heard back from Earl. I went to the Tri-Star show a couple of months ago and got this signed by him:
He's in really bad shape. Needed to take two 5-minutes breaks just in the hour I was waiting in line. To be completely honest, it really broke my heart to see him like that. Earliest childhood memories was going to the Dome and watching him run through the defence. All of those poundings took a serious toll on his body and he's the prime example why we will never, ever see another runningback get 35-40 carries a game.
Also, I wasn't aware that Topps did another All-American set. Currently working on a '55 set and I've always loved the photography.
Great thread
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
b-dub...have you checked that roger against any other versions? I think you got the autopen...I've heard when he signs he typically stacks his name, and the autopens are usually shaky from the vibration.
<< <i>b-dub...have you checked that roger against any other versions? I think you got the autopen...I've heard when he signs he typically stacks his name, and the autopens are usually shaky from the vibration. >>
I see a couple of other people have some questions over at sportscollectors.net. If he was using autopen I question why the first two cards I sent in January weren't signed and returned. It wasn't until I sent him a second package that I got one back signed and my first two cards returned unsigned?? Might have to spend the $20 to get it authenticated. Thanks for the input.
I was following this thread and have missed it. So I decided I would try my luck on some of these. I wrote several letters a week ago and have already received a good response rate.
Then today, after the Ohio State game, I went to the mailbox to find these all arriving.
I am an OSU grad and hope it was a good omen for the coming weekend against Texas
Nice job. The only one I would question would be the Sayers. There is some talk that it may be a ghost signer. I have tried twice with no success. Seems like others who have sent in $10 have had better luck. Just got this back the other day. As they say if it's too good to be true it probably is!
Has anyone heard if Jay Novacek is still alive? I sent him a card in March and still nothing. The thing that bugs me is a went out and bought a nice new expensive pen. He stole it

I sent to Novacek on 1/19/2006, and had (3/3) returned 2/24/2006. All 3 AA Retired. Asked for 1 sig and told him to keep the other 2.
This seller has some JSA certified All Americans for auction on Ebay. Also had a number of them close with very low winning bids. I believe $20 is lowest fee for JSA certification. Entered cert numbers from slabs I could read and none of them came up in the website.
1)Can it take awhile for the new slabs to be entered into JSA website 2) is there a very low fee for large submissions? 3) are these fake with fake slabs?

I've tried entering the cert numbers in the past and could never get it to work so it doesn't seem odd that these don't work either. If they are real they were gotten at a show because he won't sign through the mail as many of us autograph hounds know. And if they were signed at a show I have to believe he would be fairly pricey so why would you take such a hit and loss that kind of coin?? I see a few small differences between the two but I also think JSA is a pretty good company so I'm not sure how I feel on these.
Great cards and great scans. Very well done. I've been following this thread for some time, and it's really been an inspiration for me. Thanks for sharing.
I got Staubach back today...his signature matches exactly as the one Wintersfan got a while ago...must be autopen. darn.

Autopen: The stroke of the "signature" will be shaky, with a consistently even ink flow, and will usually end in an ink blotch, which looks like a period. This is due to the marker resting in one spot of the item too long before being lifted off. Also each Autopen signature will look exactly alike.
Ending in an "ink blotch" is probably the tell-tale thing - I'm talking from no experience other than what I read - but I blew up the number 12 - which is where the pen may have stopped/completed the sig.
Notice how the ink is pooled - when people end something - i.e. - the last part of the sig - it runs off very lightly - just sign your name and notice how your hand runs off the paper - thinning out the ink line.
Last - again - this is my conjecture for the sake of discussion - I know about as much on this topic as I do about the Thermodynamic Coefficient of Expansion and Contraction of Britney's implants!
I did not spend any money to get it authenticated because I heard from enough people to realize it was probably an autopen. I haven't had time to scan it but I just got back my Bob Griese after many many months of waiting. I never thought it was coming back.

I don't know whether you've been asked...
What's you statistics - if you kept them.
How many mailed vs. how many actually came back to you?
I do keep all the TTM autos because it is part of my collection. Would have to figure out the All American set but overall I'm at 47% when it comes to returns. I have sent out 307 requests and have gotten 147 returned. After awhile you write some off as never coming back but you never can tell. The Bob Griese took over 7 months as well as waiting over 9 months for a Paul Reuschel which I just got back earlier this week.
Just may have to pick up this unique and fun project

I got Staubach today and mine matches exactly (autopen) to the other two examples shown herein. I also got back Hart Lee Dykes today. Long lead time on each.
I have easy access to public real estate records in most of the country through work if you are having trouble tracking anybody down. If you know what county a person lives in I can usually find his house. For fun we can check their down payment, how many re-fi's they have done, etc....
I'm sorry but football players should not use a in their signature

BTW - I loved this thread. I only bought one pack of these cards just see what they looked like. Now I am looking to get a set to send stuff off. Those are just some fantastic looking sigs on these cards. Thanks for getting me started on this. Now I just have to find the cards.
It's funny, I just got my Griese back recently after 10 months - and it was thrown in the envelope without the holder it was sent in!!! WTF!!! It was slightly dinged in the mail but not too awful. Unreal.

They're perfectly alike IMO.
