"What I'm still having a hard time comprehending is how someone could spend $32K on a coin without either looking at it in person or retaining an agent to check it out. Talk about 'buy the holder, not the coin'!" Hello 2ndCharter: It's actually quite understandable to me. The guy's a fanatical Jefferson Nickel collector. He sees what's perhaps the single most desirable Jefferson nickel collector in the world. The coin is certified by the leading third party grading service. And he can't go to the auction.
What's he going to do? Stand on the sideline and miss what may be the last chance of his lifetime to assemble a complete set of Jeff Full-Steppers?
So he rolled the dice and bought on the basis of the slab. He had the odds with him but he rolled snake eyes and lost. It's happened to me more than once. It happened to him. Not the end of the world. Life goes on.
Hi Clackamas: Good to hear from you again. I think I'll take the fifth Amendment on that one.
Hello Bajjerfan: Sorry I misread your comment. But my comments about dealer ethics (or sometimes the lack of them) stand independent of your comment. There's a real issue there.
"I remain joined with the dissent at PCGS on the 60-D, it is a FS Jefferson. But it is still butt ugly." Hello Ronyahski: I wonder if we're looking at the same coin. The coin I bought is in my opinion clearly not a full stepper, and it's a perfectly fine looking MS64 Jefferson; not unattractive in any way, shape or form. But in coin collecting, people of good will can disagree, and I guess we will.
"NGC has done the same. In fact, I saw them do so just today, even though they technically had no obligation to do so." Hello Mr. Eureka: When you say that "NGC had no obligation to do so," you're saying that NGC had no guarantee. If it were a guarantee, they would have been obligated. As it was, they performed a mitzvah.
Welcome back Mr. Trade Dollar Nut:
Yes, it would appear you've found your "competent, ethical" coin dealer, and I've found a few for myself too. It am a pleasure, ain't it?!
Warm regards,

Kind of like a 5-4 Supreme Court decision. It's the law of the land, but the debate can go on. PCGS reversed its decision, who can say for sure why? Maybe the mix on the bench has changed. Point being the perceived value of the coin has changed dramatically because of two letters on a slab, yet the coin still has the best steps ever made public on a 60-D. Shouldn't be that way, but that's the system we have now.
The coin has been smacked around a bit, and has spent some time in a reactive cleaner, and I find the results very unattractive. I disagree with you, but with much good will. As my daughter would say, Peace Out.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
