Eyebone, Being from St. Louis thank for mentioning Musial. Just a first class individual. Slowly but surely people are recoginizing how really great he was. There is the Mt. Rushmore of baseball (not counting pitchers) Ruth, Cobb, Mays, Aaron, Williams and Gehrig. Then then there is the next level of almost as great and Stan certainly leads anyone else in that group. 3630 hits 1815 on the road 1815 at home. If he played for the Yankees he would be a legend greater than any Yankee except for Ruth or Gehrig, that includes Mantle and DiMaggio. But as you mention just a true gentleman.
...sad story, but who was the Ex-Steelers lineman that was killed during the police chase last year, or the year before? I know he had some history of mental problems as well...I don't think he was the average law breaker.
As for good guys in sports, there are plenty. I will say Chuck Foreman, Tony Oliva and Harmon Killebrew are among the nicest , most gracious athletes I've ever met.
Justin Strzelczyk was an O lineman for the Steelers. He was one hell of a nice guy and a motorcycle enthusiast. He got into a car chase I believe in western or up-state NY. He was throwing empty beer bottles at the police cars during the chase. He wrecked his pickup and died in the accident. Ironically, there was no alcohol in his system. I believe he had been battling mental health issues for some time.
The Steelers center through the 70s was Mike Webster died fairly recently as well. He was arrested and got a probation sentence for forgery. He had gotten hooked on his son's ritalin and was writing his own prescriptions without benefit of an MD.

How about Lamar Hoyt. I think he was caught bringing a lot of coke across the border from Mexico.
