The Money Show Announces Free Parking!
Houston, TX – The Money Show of the Southwest, scheduled for January 20, 21, 22, 2006 in Houston, has announced that it will provide free parking for dealers and the public. Collectors and those interested in attending this entertaining family event are encouraged to clip the coupons and come early to be sure to get a spot.
Entrance to the contracted lots will be by special coupon only. Parking coupons will be available on the Money Show web site, www.houstoncoinshow.org, starting December 1, 2005 and in local newspaper ads. A map showing the parking locations will also be available on the web site. Money Show parking coupons will be honored by those lots identified by Money Show signs.
The Greater Houston Coin Club has contracted for over 1,700 parking spaces during the three days of the show on three lots within a block or two of the George R. Brown Convention Center.
“We believe that we are the first major show in the nation to provide free parking for its dealers and the general public. This is another way the Greater Houston Coin Club, Inc. reduces the cost of attending its annual show” said Richard Laster, club president. “The club is committed to making the Money Show of the Southwest the friendliest show on the national numismatic show circuit” he added.
This program is designed to help increase public attendance at the Show to its 10,000 to 12,000 goal. “Free parking” is just another unique feature of this rapidly growing annual show.
Laster added, “The Money Show is our annual fund raising event. It funds all of our educational and civic minded programs. We are grateful for everyone who comes through the door and enjoys our show as well as all the volunteers that work so hard.”

I'll be seeing you there. BTW, I got one of those 78CC Morgans back I was telling you about. MS 64, missed the PL.
It was the lesser of the two though, still waiting on the other.
Oh, your parking coupon link is dead. The main link will take you there though. I've already printed it out, thanks.

<< <i>Bill: Thanks for the update that Carl Schwenker has confirmed that PCGS, ICG and ANACS will be on site grading at this year's 2006 Houston SW Money Show Thurs Jan 19th - Sun 22nd. >>
ICG is going to have a booth and will be accepting submissions at the show (saving you postage) but will not be doing actual on-site grading. Just wanted to clear that up

I'll be at a different show at the George Brown the same days.
How much time would I need to drop in and hand PCGS some items?
Should I expect a line? Please give me a guess.

Last year it was his left knee. This year right hip. Next January will be the right knee.
Looks like I will not be able to make it until 2008.....
But I hope you all have a great time in Houston!

This was my first real coin show to go to and I'm actually glad I went on Friday morning to get the feeling of the whole thing and not have to deal with the crowds. It obviously is not the greatest time to view dealer inventory as some had not even set up yet(or are not going to appear) and many were still setting up their displays at 11AM or doing what appeared to be numerous dealer-to-dealer transactions. Parking was a snap to find as there really were very few people at any of the shows at George R. Brown this morning. I spent about 2-1/2 hours going from table to table(and back around to some) and got a chance to look at just about everything that was available for sale(at the time) as the bourse was really pretty empty of private buyers/collectors like myself. There were lots of raw coins as I expected and anyone looking for mint state walkers, morgans, modern coins & gold will probably have their choice as they browse inventory. The majority of the dealers(sellers) appeared to be Texas based, but most of the big names were set up displaying some really nice coins. Not surprising the majority of the slabbed coins were NGC(largest amount), ANACS & SEGS except for some of the larger dealers who had a nice assortment of PCGS coins. There were PCGS slabs at most dealers tables... just not that many. Actually it was a disappointment for me as I was only looking for AU seated halves and a couple of late date mercs in PCGS holders. Of what was available there were some MS seated halves & a few rarer AU's that are out of my ballpark right now. If I was looking for raw seated halves I could have gone through quite a few, but most looked like they deserved to be in those 2x2's or eventually in ANACS net holders. I found very few PCGS slabbed mercs to look at and not a one to add to my '40-'45 green label 66FB set.
It was definitely worth the time to get accustomed to the show atmosphere and I walked out with nothing new. I've got inquiries in with an east coast dealer that I am expecting pictures from today or tomorrow, so I really was not in the market anyway. I'm sure later today and Saturday/Sunday will be quite busy, but the weather might be a factor also.
<< <i>Did you make sure there are no GPS devices attached to your car? >>
Nahhhhh.... it was pretty obvious I walked out with nothing and I wasn't dressed like I had any money to speak of. It wasn't a great start though as while I was waiting to cross the street to the convention center I was approached by a not-desirable looking man who first thing told me he was not trying to rob me. Okaaaaaaaaaayyyyy.... I walked right through the *No Walking* light and on to the show. Not one police officer anywhere that I could see which wasn't encouraging. Maybe they were hiding in the bushes.
Perhaps I will bump into you and other forum members tomorrow.

It was good to finally meet ER, and to once again see other fellow forum members TBT (Bryan), Anaconda (Adrian), MHammerman (Mike), Rella (Robert), Blade (Tom), and Brandon. Sorry that I missed seeing DPoole (David).
I purchased three Morgan Dollars today. One is a very interesting 1886-O in NGC AU-58 PL (VAM 1-A - "E" Clash Mark), which was an unattributed very collectible VAM Variety. NGC grades deserving AU Morgan Dollars with a PL designation, while PCGS does not.
This coin is very scarce in high grade PL, which combined with the VAM variety makes it a very unusual and interesting show find!!

<< <i>I just got back home from the show. I was there from about 10:00 to 12:00 and other than finding 4 raw F barber halves, didn't find a heck of alot to choose from. I did stop by the PCGS table and renew my membership, as well as drop off 3 CC Morgans (1889, 90 and 91) for grading. Sandy from PCGS helped me and was great!
I spent the rest of the day (until about 4:30) at the Tri-Star sports memorabilia show in the GB Center.
Steve >>
So you spent 2 hours at the Money Show and 4 1/2 hours at the Tri -Star Sports Collectibles Show .How did the shows compare as far as attendance and show promotion in your opinion?
Do you think Tri - Star would make good coin show promoters ? They have the experience in putting on large scale shows.Based on the show reports so far the Money show seemed slow.
I have been looking in the Houston Chronicle for ads about the Money Show but seemed to have missed them.I did see a lot of ads for the Tri -Star Sports Collectibles Show(also at the George R. Brown Convention center this weekend) over the last couple of weeks and the Houston Gun Collectors Show and the International Gem and Jewlery Show (both shows happpening this weekend) at the Reliant Center in Houston.

Unfortunately, I can't really talk knowledgeably about any local advertising, since I live in San Antonio. Based on the attendance however, the sports show definitely seemed to have more customers. Tri-Star is probably the #1 sportscard show promoter in the country; they put full-page ads in all the hobby publications for months before each show.
I subscribe to Coinage and Coins magazines, and I can't remember seeing any advertising about the coin show in any issue. The only place I saw any mention was here on the CU boards.
