What is your white whale?

From this forum it appears one of our members captured his white whale. Congrats. I thought it would be interesting to see what other white whales lurk out there and who knows maybe someone can help capture it.

I am trolling the waters for a 1968 Kahns Red Stripe Version of Tony Perez. Any sightings? WHat is your white whale?

1957 Topps Basketball-Horace McKinney. in PSA 4 or above

It pops up on ebay occassionally, but I always get outbid by "bigger pockets".
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

  • I am looking for early Packers. My white whale(s) have been the 1935 Chicle football high numbers - 32 and 33. My other white whale is the 1948 Leaf FB #97 Rhodemyre in EX or better. Two of them:

1960 Fleer football #7 Sid Gillman PSA 9 -- the only one
1960 Fleer football #84 Jim Woodard PSA 8+ -- which doesn't exist yet

  • 66 topps football #132 CHECKLIST Like Mike said which does not exist yet only 2 7,s nota 8,s
  • For cards that don't currently exist and for which I have current sets, I'd have to go with the 1977, 1984 and/or 1985 Topps Basic Walter Payton in PSA 10. I can't believe the latter two still have no examples yet. I wouldn't mind landing a 1966 Philly Sayers PSA 10 some day either. Lastly, I'd have to say a PSA 10 Mike Garrett from the 1970 Kellogg's FB set (the ONLY card not to have a 10 yet, due to inherent centering problems).

As for existing cards, I'd have a Top 5 grouping like this, not necessarily in this order:

    1. 1970 Kellogg's BB Brooks Robinson PSA 10
    2. The five remaining 1970 Kellogg's FB 1/1 PSA 10s I currently don't have (Brown, Jacobs, Carl Garrett, Meador, Cook)
    3. The four PSA 9 Sayers basic cards I need to finish off his set in all 9s (1967 Philly, 1968, 1969, 1971 Topps)
    4. Any of the fifteen or so cards from the Payton Master set that I don't currently have the highest graded copy of, particularly the 1979 Topps #335 PSA 10 and the 1981 Topps Red Border Sticker #4 PSA 10. I think MOSH has 7-8 1/1s from this group that I'll never get ahold of.
    5. Any of the remaining PSA 10s I lack from the 1970 Kellogg's BB set. I should be down to under 15 of those with graded copies very soon.

I've got one of those, but the darned thing was printed at a 90 degree angle. You'd think that the quality control group at Armour would have caught that. Oh well.... image

    Oh yeah, white whales...

    (1) 1969 Kahn's Ron Santo Red Stripes - I'm betting that this card doesn't exist although it's been listed in the prices guides since the early '60s (well, maybe not quite that long). Every "complete" set I've ever seen is missing it (including the Copeland collection and the recent Mastro auction). None have been graded by PSA.

    (2) 1971 Bazooka Numbered (baseball) #46-#48 Hundley, Mays, Hunter. I suspect that the rest of the set was printed on a sheet but the Hundley, Mays, and Hunter were printed as a complete box.

    (3) 1982 Fleer Test Cal Ripken (w/ correct name) - Came in two flavors: one with name as Dave Ford on front and one with real name.

    (4) 1969 Fleer 3-D Plastic Baseball Trophies - Montreal Expos - Not sure it exists.

    (5) 1962 Kahn's Bob Purkey (no autograph)

    (6) 1969 O-Pee-Chee Wax Pack (baseball) - Not sure it exists.

    (7) 1969 Topps #476 Ken Brett Rookie White Letter (PSA 7)

    (8) 1959 Topps #40 Warren Spahn Born in 1930 (without the obscurred "3") - Not sure it exists.

    (9) 1986 Sportflics Prototypes Dave Winfield (statistic back)

    That'll do....

That's what you have to love about you, Bob. The rest of us here are complaining about cards that either 100% exist, or should one day exist [e.g. exists in PSA 8, but not yet in PSA 9]. You have to be all pie-in-the-sky about looking for things that you cannot even confirm exist. Not to mention that 99.9% of us here would defer to your knowledge on these issues - so if you say it probably doesn't exist, who are we to argue?

FWIW - I'm also itching for a Doolan Lenox back. Sure one is out there - but only really started looking a few months ago. [I have the two other Phillies with Lenox backs already, McQuillan and Magee]

  • Skinsfan,
The pop for your 66 checklist 132 is now up to 5. A veritable common. Still no 8's and I wouldn't mind getting one of those as well.

The one that is torqueing me off though is the 65 Philly Renfro. I have waited about two years for an 8. Have seen two in the last month only to find though HOF rookie guys want it even more than I do.

    Fuzz
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

Sorry about that Renfro. I got the last one.

My White Whale is a 66 Bobby Orr PSA 9 which does not exist.
