Is that the Schmidt's Outdoor Series beer cans you have? Are those the old church key variety cans? Did you purchase those or find them? Really nice series. Looks like some Billy Beer cans as well at the end?

    Hi,

I am new to the message boards, but have been reading the posts for a while. I like almost everyone had collected as a child. The main years I collected were 1979-1981 and then I got back into the hobby from 1987-1992. Now I have been back again for about 4 or 5 years. I collect mostly vintage PSA graded HOFers and Superstars from 1954-1983. I have over 500 graded cards and they range as follows: 1950's I buy PSA 5's and 6's, the 1960's - 1973 I buy PSA 6's and 7's, 1974-1979 I buy PSA 7's and 8's and from 1980 up PSA 8 and higher. I have some newer graded such as a 1993 Derek Jeter SP PSA 8, 1994 A-Rod SP PSA 8 and a few others. However, I like vintage the best. The best cards I have are a 1954 Topps Ted Williams (Yellow One) PSA 5, 1964 Mickey Mantle PSA 6, 1956 Ted Williams PSA 5, 1967 Mickey Mantle PSA 6, 1968 Mickey Mantle PSA 6, 1969 Mickey Mantle PSA 6, 1969 Reggie Jackson PSA 6, 1969 Nolan Ryan PSA 7 and a 1973 Mike Schmidt PSA 7. My favorite players to collect are Al Kaline, though I am not a Tigers fan, I just admire the fact that he put up great numbers quietly. I also like Mickey Mantle (like almost everyone), Joe Morgan and Sandy Koufax.

I also have recently built a 1969 Topps basic set (just finished last week) with the top 32 player graded 6 or 7. I chose the 1969 Topps Set because it is the year my parents got married and it was the last Mickey Mantle and first Reggie Jackson card (I was a big fan as a kid). The rest of the set is raw and ranges from EX+ to NRMT-MT and I am currently working on a 1973 set. I also have every Topps set from 1976-2004 (except for 1997).

I am not looking to make a fortune collecting cards. Though, like most I don't want to throw away my money either. To me it is a nice escape back to your childhood. I like attractive looking cards, but I am not trying to go for the best of the best. Though, I am not knocking anyone who does.

I included one of my display cases of cards. I know the picture isn't the greatest. Sorry for the longwinded message, but I like to read about other people's collections, so I figure you would like to read about mine.

    Thanks,
    Terry

Here is a picture of 30 of PSA Graded 1970 Topps Cards. The gray borders are not the greatest, but I love the photos from that year.

    Terry, very nice collection!!!

That first photo looks a lot like mine, and I seem to collect the same way you do.

1980's and beyond in 9's, 70's and 60's in PSA 7 and 8, and I just started the '55 All American set
in PSA 6. I've got a display out similar to yours with a few rookies and some of my favorite rookies.

    By the way, image

Thanks Shawn. It is nice to hear from someone who collects similar to how I do. What cards are your favorite?

I was a baseball only collector when I "returned" to the hobby in 2001, but since 03 have been buying a lot more football. My son who is 8 enjoys that more so nearly all the new packs I buy are football.

When I first joined PSA back in 01 or 02, they sent me a book call The 200 Greatest Sportscards of All-Time. If you haven't seen it yet, it's pretty interesting. Now I realize I won't ever have more than 40 of them because of financial reasons, but I started with the recent ones and began working backwards.

So I have PSA 9's of McGwire, Bonds, Griffey, Gwynn, E. Smith, B. Sanders etc.
PSA 8's of Ripken, Arod, Henderson, Rice, Elway, Brett, etc.
And PSA 7's now of Carlton, Bench, R. Jackson, Schmidt, etc.

Next on the list are guys like Carew, Seaver, Bradshaw, Sayers, Payton, etc. But further back there are two 1955 topps all americans on the list, and seeing those two cards made me interested in the whole set. I've only got 10 now but this set should eat up all of my extra cash for the next couple years. But it's a blast.

Other than that, I collect a few cards from my local teams, the Pacers, Colts, and Reds.

I'll try to get a few scans up of my "room" soon.

Impossible to compete with some of the beauties on this thread, WOW!!!

    Shawn.

    Hi Terry

I also want to welcome you. I think this case is very well made. Is there a glass cover? I can't tell for sure.

Thanx for sharing your collection and I hope you enjoy your stay here.

    Hi Mike,

It is acrylic, not glass. I bought the case off ebay for $105.00 (I think) with shipping. It is not superior quality, but it displays nice and I like the cherry color. I put velcro over the snaps, so it would open easier. I have seen better cases, but this one addresses my needs and presents my cards well.

    Shawn,

It sounds like you have a nice collection too.

When I last stopped collecting, I was basically collecting football and basketball. It just seemed like there was way too much baseball prodcut out there. However, now that Magic, Bird and Jordan are gone, I just can't get into B-Ball anymore. It is still my favorite sport to play, but I just can't watch the pros.

I see your a Reds fan. I am a big fan of Joe Morgan. I only saw him in the later years of his career, but the guy always seemed to make teams he went to better. He is now my favorite anaylst.
  • really nice displays, guys. i am a firm believer that you should display your collection rather than have it collect dust in your closet. I understand the reasons for keeping cards in a safety deposit box or in a vault, but i believe cards are meant to be handled and looked at. Otherwise, it's simply like an investment...tucked away to accumulate profit over your initial payment.
