This is the best place to get advice on photography of coins......

This is a very good place to learn how to use your camera to take great photos of coins. Thanks to everyone for the help. Here are the latest images......Thanks MikeInFL, nwcs and mgoodm3! Original thread is here. In case your wondering I'm shooting with a Nikon D70 with a Quantary 50mm Macro lense. I will take a shot of the lighting setup but it is a three light setup with a tripod.

Soon, you'll want a longer lens. Take a look at the Tamron 90mm -- great lens for the money ($449 on sale at B&H). The Nikon 70-180 Micro or 200mm Micro are probably the best two for coin photography, IMHO, but they are both just north of $1,000.
Personally, I use a Nikon 70-200 VR with Canon 500D closeup lens for 90% of my photos. I use a Nikon 60mm Micro for the other 10%.
The longer lens will give you more flexibility with lighting positioning. I've found that the "higher" the light(s) the better the photos.
Have fun...Mike
That 1878-S is awesome.

There is a reason I don't own many coins...
Great pictures, Brian.
Cameron's right, the luster just drips off those coins !
Russ, as I remember correctly, your camera skills are also quite good and your set up cost a whole lot less. I guess, its all good. You guys are heads over my skills ( which at the moment is "nil" ).
