In a pawn shop? Are ya kiddin' me????

I drove out today to hit some used CD stores and some pawn shops in order to pick up some material for my music web sites. Normally I never bother looking for coins, as "pawn shop" and "quality coins" are usually mutually exclusive terms.

Pawn shop coins consist exclusively of U.S. proof sets, mint sets, low-grade morgan and peace dollars, indian head pennies and buffalo nickels with barely readable dates, and all of it ridiculously overpriced. Darkside material is nonexistent.

Well, as I was walking out of one with my CDs under my arm, I glanced down at the case next to the door and saw some coins. "Ehh, why not?" There was the usual garbage, and a bunch of extremely worn British pennies.

And the coin below sitting in a flip. $20 pricetag. I glanced at it briefly and asked "Take $15 for it?" Deal!

I have no clue as to which of the bazillion varieties it is, but even if it is the cheapest variety I think I did ok.

Check out the nice die break and the triple "F" shown in the last picture (closeup).

Are you sure you want to see it?

It's nicer than the pictures show... weak strike but no wear that I can find...

Well, it's got some gunk on the obverse... maybe I shouldn't have bought it...

Well..... ok....

Freeman Obverse 2, Reverse D, toothed border both sides. My 2005 Spink claims it to be £15 VF and £50 EF (£225 UNC).

The piece looks to be aEF. The strike may be weak as opposed to the coin being worn, since the facial features are good.

The triple F is undocumented in any of my sources. While Gouby calls the standard die pairing a rarity "N3" (relatively available), the issue with the F could merit some interest from bronze specialist collectors. You might want to contact Michael Gouby (Michael coins, London) and determine if he has seen any.

    Nice find!! image

    That's the toothed boarder variety!!

The toothed border is the common variety of penny. It is far rarer for halfpennies.

The beaded border 1860 is considered now among the rarest of bronze pennies, rivaling the 1869.

No doubt! I was NOT expecting to find anything numismatic today... it made my day.

I've posted an inquiry and pics on two of the more UK-centric coin collecting boards; hopefully someone can possibly shed some light on the tripled/recut "F"...

I wouldn't be surprised to see the coin grade at AU-55 or better, since I see hardly any evidence of wear at all, and it has tons of red left on it. Maybe a bath in acetone would help the gunk problem.

  • Hey you guys who would know more than I do about this: that "gunk" on the obverse... is it possible the coin was varnished at one time?

Just curious. Neat coin, and a great find.

    Wow! What a nice pickup!

The "gunk" looks like old mucilage glue, I think.

Whatever it is, it wouldn't hurt to try some acetone on it.

I would be double happy for this, just because I hate pawn shop owners, they make a living out of people's miseries.

Here's another one. It's a stronger strike than mine, but I think mine has less wear and more lustre. It's been remarked that the one in the link is "seriously overpriced" at 285 pounds.
