Philippine 47S Peso & 50 Centavo

This is the Mcarther set I mentioned in another post. The pics don't look as good as the coins in hand. Both coins have nice golden toning all around the circumference to the bottom of the letters on both obverses and almost to the top of the letters on the reverses....

Rick, a very nice pair. These were the first coins struck for the Phils after WWII. They were minted in SF, I believe. I've always liked the simple design, and Gen Mac is of course one cool dude! Although they were intended for circulation, many were saved. Thus, a whole lot are found in UNC, but because of the soft strike and open fields, not many true gems are around. Yours look pretty darn good! Any idea when the U.S. Phils coinage was demonetized?? The next date after the Gen Mac coins are 1958, I believe. I'll have to look it up image

Hi Tim, This should answer you question on demonetization......Rick

By 1964, the bullion value of the old silver pesos was worth almost twelve times their face value and were being hoarded by Filipinos rather than being surrendered to the government at face value. In desperation, then-President Diosdado Macapagal demonitised the old silver coins and floated the currency. The peso has been a floating currency ever since, which means that the currency is a physical representation of the domestic debt and whose value directly tied to people's perception of the stability of the current regime and its ability to repay the debt.Linky poo to complete article

  • Walker - I have those two as a set and like them very much - If you noticed the mintage figures for them - one (I think the 50c) had 100,000 and the other only 50,000.
    Nice catch

Hi oldshep, In Aldo Basso's book (coins, medals & tokens of the Philippines), he lists the peso at 100,000 and the 50c. at 200,000 and minted in San Fran. Still nice mintages........Rick

Wow Spiny! That's a super coin image Very clean and a much better strike than normally seen. Will that grade as high as 66/67? If so, you've got a very special coin there (special anyway, whatever the grade) image
  • Thanks 21W and Filam! I'm not sure if it would get a bump for eye appeal or not, but I wouldn't guess more than a 65 because of the die burn along the jaw line. It's still a special coin, though, since I snagged it from one of JamminJ's regular stops. image
