Man, that was fun! My favorite card in there...drum roll....1983 AS set of 40. Fantastic card that you don't see everyday. Have you settled on the NM/MT 1978 or are you looking to upgrade it? Nice cards in all...what a collection! Thanks for sharing.

It's funny, I've always built sets (and still do) and always thought it would be kind of creepy to collect a single player. I have started several PSA sets (1975, 1974, 1973), but have not had the patience or discipline to stick with them. I started picking up Bretts (graded and raw) about two years ago and I'm still at it. I guess I'm converted.
downgoesfrazier: I am always looking to upgrade, even within grades. The '76 and '78 are both pains. I've only seen a couple '78s I really like, but either missed them or was outbid. The NM-MT one I have was snagged off e-Bay a couple years ago and is really only a placeholder. I have picked up several NM-MT '76s over the past couple years, but none have had the registration of the one I have now. So, despite the fact that it's centering is somewhat distracting, it stays, well at least until something better comes along.
Great thread!
Thanks
Randy
Some really cool Palmer stuff going on!
Southern, Yeah, I really dig the hit-dog. Truly an underrated player offensively. Four titles and a boat-load of BIG hits on some pretty diverse offense clubs. He could situation-hit with anybody and drive the ball when needed...truly a stud with the stick.
It also seems quite a few guys I know are doing Boggs sets. What is his appeal? I must have missed the boat on that guy. He was the meaning of vanilla for me. I feel like I missed out. He must've been a heck of a talent with some color as there are some pretty ardent collectors of his out there!
Dakota,
It's funny. When I posted this I said to my wife, "Watch, someone will post within 24 hours about a "tilt" that doesn't exist on one of these cards. It seems every time I post a card, someone posts about a "tilt" or "diamond-cut". No, there is no tilt at all...I mean NONE, and yes, your eyes are playing tricks on you. Here's the deal with 1977 Topps: MANY, MANY set-builders and guys who have broken product have emailed me scans and text regarding "tilts that don't exist". Meaning, when they look at the top left margin where the picture begins it looks narrow, but the rest of the card looks perfectly straight. I've been asked if the whole vending box was cut undersized, etc. The answer is simply...nobody knows what that illusion is. The Madlock is as square as they come. I've owned all of the 10's and a half-dozen 9's before setting the current card. It measures dead-on front and back...actually 50/50! As a matter of fact, I hate tilts with such a passion that I would literally throw a card away if it had a noticeable slant to it regardless of overall condition. It's like a picture hanging crooked in a frame for me.
Interesting to note that "50/50" is really, really rare on a trading card. People SAY 50/50, but how often does it actually measure...not too often.

Good stuff fellas!
WOOOOOOOOW! Love those Orrs--the rookie in particular is as nice a sample as I have ever seen. Where is the 67-68 base? It has always been my personal favourite visually.
Great stuff. Eyebone

What the heck is that LA Lakers clock and pennant doing in your dad's rec room? They look a bit out of place. Very cool room though.

The 67 Orr is very tough to find in PSA 9 grade, and because it is so visually appealing, it tends to get a lot of attention whenever one shows up at auction. I think current examples in PSA 9 grade are now going for around 2K, if you can find one. It is high on my want list, I just have to have patience to wait for it.
As for the Laker pennant, it was actually given to my dad as a sort of gag, given that he is such a diehard Celtics fan. If you ever wanted to pi*ss off my dad, all you had to do was mention Magic Johnson or the Lakers. Over the years he came to at least appreciate the Lakers and all the great games they had with the Celtics in the 80's. That's why if you look hard enough, you'll see a few Laker/Magic trinkets among all the Celtics items.
