I should call this "How to sell your coins by posting them as a halfhearted joke on the Open Forum!"

I had my Plate Money in my dealer case for a year and a half (Well, I had it in the bottom of my case because it wouldn't fit in the rotating trays, but I had a sign in one of the trays telling folks it was there).

Had one interested party but no sale. Reduced the price. Put it on BST. Reduced the price again. No sale. Put it here in the Weekend Swap a time or three. No sale. Was gonna swap it to Civitas for some other stuff that would actually fit in my case but decided to put it on eBay first, so I listed it last night. I started the bidding at $285 since I had $280 plus fees in it, meaning that if it sold at my opening bid I would actually lose a few bucks. I did put a $365 BIN on it out of optimism since that was the original upper limit I hoped for (and everybody knows BIN prices are always a bit optimistic, right?)

I dunno if it would've sold or not. Maybe. I had nine watchers but no bids until tonight.

There was a thread on the Open Forum where a member was getting ribbed for posting thinly-disguised spam, so several of us jokingly posted our own spammy links to our own eBay auctions.

It was a joke. Who knew it would pay off?

Suddenly there was a bidding war between two Open Forumites over my coin! image

I ended up closing the auction early for one of them and selling it to him at my BIN price.

Go figure.

I wouldn't recommend this sales tactic for just anyone, though- it was kinda weird how it paid off for me. It doesn't seem to have worked as well for MadMarty. image

Now, the question is- if I had let the auction run, would a third party have come in and sniped it even higher? It's entirely possible. Normally I don't end auctions early for just anybody, but hey- I got my optimistic BIN price and was fully candid about the fact that it was probably too much. (Even though it was still well below the Krause price). And it was a Darkside coin, too. Go figure.

I have seen LM's 'coin' in person. It should be registered as a dangerous weapon.

It's Sold???? How can I snipe it now????

You failed to mention that it went to the OF village idiot....wait 'til he tries to put it in the gum-ball machine (or any other food vending machine)...heh heh

You have to narrow it down a little, Cacheman. So many make claims to that title.

Sorry. I didn't read the thread.

Yes, on a quick glance you have it pegged. I should have known.

I think you should have let it keep going...especially if you gave notice of what you thought the real value was (which was extremely fair thing for you to do).

Sometimes it is okay to bid 'too much' by other people's standards, as long as it's okay by your own standards. I'm sure some of the medal sellers love me--I've bid on more than a few medals without any idea of a 'true value'. I only know how much it's worth to me, and to one person bidding under me. Not smart I suppose, but oh well.

Maybe it's like the toned coin thing, you get a few people going crazy over a coin for something that has not much to do with a catalog value, but everything due to a value determined by a particular individual's tastes and desires. For tarnish. image. Or in the case of the plate money, maybe it should be oxidation ???

Who knows what was going through your bidder's minds, but perhaps you should have let them play it out.
