New photos- 1805 half dime

Here's a pic of one of my favorite early coins, an 1805 half dime. The original mintage listed in the Red Book was a measly 15,600 pieces. This one has been dipped, it has a slightly corroded reverse, and has a shallow rim tap at 7:00 on the obverse, but as far as these go, it's "problem free." (The term "problem-free", as it applies to early half dimes, means that it has less than 4 holes punched in it, and has been trampled by horses only once or twice.)

I love it. I am so jealous about the half dime collection that you bought....

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that your 1805 half dime is an LM-1/V1 (since that is the only die marriage known for the year). It certainly looks like it. Nice coin, by the way. And your comment about "The term "problem-free", as it applies to early half dimes, means that it has less than 4 holes punched in it, and has been trampled by horses only once or twice" is unfortunately all too true. These delicate little coins sure took a beating.

    Outstanding coin! image

Most folks aren't fortunate enough to have an example of the TYPE, in any condition, much less such a nice one as yours.
(and much, much less a set of them, as you do)
    Congrats!

  • The 1805 half dime is a rare coin and long recognized as a "key" and better date half dime. To my mind, all Draped Bust Half Dimes are desirable. My sense is that your coin is about XF details or nearly so. The coin is very rare in original high XF through Unc. Even though your example is cleaned and has other issues, it is still a very nice find. matteproofimage matteproof

That is a fine specimen! I'd take problem coins like that one all day, every day. Thanks again for sharing photos of your collection.
