DARKSIDE BST Board?

Hey Everyone,

I know we always have the FC Memorial Swap each weekend, which I love. But after seeing the Rupee that CoinAddict picked up in the BST board the other day, I have been making sure to check the BST as well as Ebay when looking for coins each day. The unfortunate part of this story is that as many of you know, the BST is about .00000001% Darkside and the rest liteside crap I don't want to sort through (as much as I want to buy sets of Silver Bullion Eagles....).

In addition to our weekly swap, what is the general opinion about having a board set aside for people with standing inventories of coins for sale, maybe even just with a post from them with general info about their specialties along with the appropriate web link? To me it seems that having a permanent place where people can go right to other Darksiders for certain areas or specific coin buys would be a nice addition to the weekly post where people can highlight certain coins for sale or sell off parts of collections that do not interest them anymore.

Just a thought.

Nick

Good idea. I much prefer buying coins from people I know. More fun. More social. Less risk.

The main problem with that that I see is that it must be approved and space allocated for it by the hosts, namely CU. And from what I've heard so far, they're very reluctant to make any changes in that area.

    Hmmmm.

I figured there may be issues with CU, but can't we use the threat of violence or something?

A weekly swap thread seems the best solution to me, especially if accompanied by a reduction in stand alone SSPs.
  • I completly agree with JamminJ.
SSPs should be in the weekly swaps.

I'm always hesitant to post SSPs (but sometimes I just gotta). I for one would like a Darkside BST board, but here's the main problem with that. One could argue as a Buffalo Nickel collector, all that ever shows up on the BST board is that "certified Morgan Dollar crap" so maybe there should be a separate one for Buffalo Nickels. I don't think the powers that be would view it as worth their time to start down the slippery slope of breaking up the BST board. I also rarely bother to post anything to the BST board because I know it will be lost in the fray as well as pushed several pages down within 15 minutes, so why waste my time.

Maybe we need to establish a PCGS Darksiders BST Yahoo Group?

    [15 minutes later]

OK, I've gone ahead and set one up in case anyone wants to give it a try. This way offers will go directly to the mailboxes of members, less SSP clutter, no lost posts in the sea of BST Coins, etc. Worth a shot I suppose. If it doesn't work out, no harm done I guess.

I've actually found some of Josh's BST posts and bought coins as a result.

One solution may be to always put the word "darkside" in the title of BST posts for easy searching.

That's true. I have always included that when appropriate for my offerings or auctions. It does seem to net a few extra lookers.

So true, so true. I am guilty of having a few SSP thread, but I also try to have a giveaway every so often.

And Ajaan... seriously... there is nothing wrong with an SSP. I have done one Irish ssp about 7-8 months ago.

    Ditto me.

Even if I never SSP'ed, I like SSPs from others because some of the best Brit coins I have in my collection come from the members here. I don't see abuse of the system, so why change it?

I agree with that. This forum impresses the heck out of me with it's ability not to abuse a system that seems fair, and actually works for people.

I like the idea of a giveaway to go along with the SSP's. I think a lot of people have been exposed to some interesting coins that way.

Here, here... I for one would feel deprived if SSPs disappeared. It's always nice to have a "heads up" if you're in a buying mood, especially from trusted numismatic friends.

I like Josh's approach, but have no problem with SSPs. As other members have pointed out, you can always ignore them. I also find there are times when I have material that I KNOW would be of interest to board members, and would rather see one of my coins go to someone I know that will really appreciate it image

Well, I had no intention of disparaging the way that Forum members do their business by my posting a suggestion for a Darkside BST. I was simply thinking it would be much more fun and a nice supplement to the weekly Frank Chiong Memorial Swap as well as the SSP threads. I honestly was unaware of the BST until CoinAddict bought his nice rupee there last week. Then in the days that followed, I learned how frustrating it is to try and look through all of the liteside crap to only find maybe a handful of darkside listings.

I am a big fan of SSP's, giveaway tie ins, Ebay listings and the weekly swap. I have been a fortunate winner of a few giveaways and very grateful to have been so lucky. I have bought many coins off of the weekly swap and love the ability to do business with people I consider friends and colleagues. The end of this thread has seemed to change into a pro/con SSP idea which was not my intention. I would hate to see the SSP's disappear as well. I would utilize them myself if I wasn't such a freaking packrat.

I just thought it would be nice to have a clearinghouse of sorts where people could check out other members' current wares for sale (like entire inventories if we went with a VCoins type of set up where members' web pages are sorted by their selling specialties) so people could drop in everyday or week and check to see if there was something of interest for them to buy.

    No offense intended everyone,

    Nick

I don't think anyone took it that way, Nicholasz.

Yes Nick, this was an excellent thread.

I liked Clankeye's comment about how this forum regulates itself. There are SSPs by unknowns and SSPs by members who contribute here everyday, there's a big difference. The other day, I was rather harsh to someone who double posted his SSP, essentially taking out my bad mood of the moment at him. These are posts I could have done without. The forum members know very well, which thread to ignore and which one to take seriously.

Well, okay, Clankeye and Syracusian assauged my wounded ego there, so now I am all better.

But I am still mad because I haven't found much of anything this week! Stupid ebay!

In anycase, I signed up for Civitas' yahoo group and would encourage other members to do the same. I don't mind getting sellers' emails when they are people I am familiar with and especially so if they have stuff I want.

Speaking of which, isn't it kind of late for the Swap and Weekly NEWPS not to be up?
