Overpayment for Mint sets? Winner anounced!

We just bought a wonderful old time orginal collection of coins here at Jade. Some of the interesting things in here were some 1956 Mint Sets that were still in orginal shipping envelopes addressed to the gentleman whos estate we bought. Now it seems that "John" overpaid for some of his mint sets that he ordered.
Question: How did the mint in 1956 handle his over payment reimbursement?
Will have a prize for the first correct answer.

Andrew asked me to post the following images of the actual 1956 Mint Set with the $0.01 refund stamp. ss350camaro was first to answer correctly. He will receive a SEALED (really) 1961 Proof Set that came out of the same estate as the 1956 Mint Set. Thanks to all for playing along. Dennis

What do they do if you overpay now?

What do they do if you overpay now? >>
Ha! Probably charge your credit card an "inconvenience fee" for screwing up the governments accounting system. I was amazed that they took the time to hand write a note that detailed the overpayment. 1956 is a by-gone era in many regards, but especially regarding customer service.

I just saw the answer, that is very neat and cool...I wish it was 1958 all over again.
<< <i>Were stamps legal tender? >>
There were encased stamps way back that were essentially legal tender but this is less true
for regular postage stamps. They do make a commodity which is valuable to most people and
are inexpensive to ship.
