Howdy folks, this is my first post. Started collecting in 1964, got disillusioned by no grading standards and auctioned out around 1985. Started collecting again a couple years ago in a fairly safe grade, AU/60. I have moved up to putting together a circulated set of Morgans with the keys slabbed. I am also collecting 20th century key dated, also slabbed. I have been lurking here for about a year. I see a lot of knowledge here and I hope to mine some of that. So anyway here I am and I hope we can get acquainted.

Now that you are collecting again you can be disillusioned by the grading "standards" this time.

It's not perfect, but I guess collecting coins slabbed by reputable TPGs is the best we have. It helps keep it fun. Usually.

xbob, The biggest difference between now and then is I can get on the internet and look at thousands of coins. Back then I would wait for catalogues and you basically bought sight unseen. Now I can go to many dealers and look at many examples of just about any key dates in just about all grades. Now if I could just learn to grade properly. I really like circulated Morgans in 15 to 35, but they must have a certain "look" that I like.

Grandad, I sold at a major auction house. Some of my coins made the cover and I am proud of that. A lot of big dealers back then bragged on being the tightest graders and I guess I fell for it. Their mantra was, "our gem BUs are equal to their choice BUs", when auction time came, some of these "gems" were three to a lot. The same dealer that sold me the coins lotted them up. Now, I follow the adage: Buy the coin and not the grade. There are plenty of nice stuff to go around, you don't have to buy the first thing that comes along. When I bid on line, I put my limit in early and don't worry about it. I won't get swept up in a bidding frenzy that way. If its an uncirculated or key circulated Morgan, then it has to be certified. Coin collecting is the greatest hobby in the world but you can't be just a buyer. I rejoined the ANA, I read articles on US coins and I read the coin forums.
