I think this is going to get interesting!!

I sent a crossover order in, when it posted today coin #5 was wrong.

Coin #5 was this
1981 S TYPE 2 1C PF 69 RD ULTRA CAMEO

But PCGS listed it as this
5 04589160 1981-S 5C Type 2 USA PR68DC

Customer service called back and said they would correct the 5C and make it a 1C. BUT, they gave it a grade of 68DCAM not the 69DCAM. This was NOT a cross at any grade order. If the coin didn't cross it should have come back a DNC. But PCGS cracked it out and downgraded the coin. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to see what PCGS is going to do.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I experienced something similar that happened to a crossover submission recently. Don't jump to conclusions until you have the coin in your presence. The coin might have crossed at the NGC grade and was listed in the PCGS database incorrectly or did not cross at all.

They should pay you the spread between the two grades* and send the coin, as is, in the PR68DCAM holder I'd think.
(*Even though there's a value difference between NGC and PCGS with this variety/type, it's the fair thing to do to make up for their error.)

  • So what are they going to do if they accidentally cross a coin lower than the minimum grade requested? Are they going to reimburse you like their guarantee says?

Send it to SGS and get a 70 DCAM.

I'm hoping it comes home in a 69DCAM holder.

  • Same thing happened to me once with a 1880/9 Morgan in a NGC MS67 holder. They put it in a PCGS MS66 holder. When I complained, they cracked the coin out and put it in a PCGS MS67 holder.

  • They will probably send you the coin in a 68dcam holder along with the $4 difference in price from the two grades. image

Yep, gonna get interesting alright. I can't get over the collector that managed to get his coin in a higher graded PCGS holder simply by complaining a bit. Impressive.image

That's not the point. I remember this was brought up in the Q&A once. If no grade is written down, they will cross at the grade listed on the coin or higher. If you write down a lower grade or cross at any grade, then they crack the coin and run it through as a regular submission. I'm hoping it was just a mech error and they correct it. Knowing PCGS they will make it right.

They will make it right. Similar happened to me on a crossover submission recently. It was quickly corrected.

Just got word from PCGS, it was a computer glitch and the coin is a DNC.
