Really super picture.... But I also liked all your other pics too.
Another dumb question.... Are you just using the Cool Pix 950 as is? no extra add ons to take such nice pictures? I realize you probably use special lighting also.
Russ, I would love to see what kind of setup you have and where you have your lights positioned and such.. I still cannot get an evenly lit coin. I am thinking the next step is to get a copystand so I can get the bulk of the tripod out of the equation and be able to get lights behind the coin...

Does it need any special macro lenses? I have an old Kodak DC240 that I use for coin photography that I need to use macro lenses with. It's literally falling apart and I need to get something else.

The Nikon Coolpix line of cameras are all point-and-shoots and do not require any add-on lenses or anything like that... the Coolpix cameras already have a very nice macro lens built in

i just went looking on the web and see copy stand prices of 400-800 bucks, and a few for 40-80. what cheap brand/model should be used for the nikon 950 camera?
i'm going to be selling some things on e-bay sooner or later and want to be able to get some good shots for my listings.
i have an hp photosmart 720 series camera now, and have unsuccessfully attempted to shoot some coins in slabs, can't seem to get the close-ups in focus. and the tri-pod wouldn't work in the vertical position, so i need to start with the copy stand.
i hope i'm not hijacking this thread, russ. my questions seem to be on topic.

I could have NEVER captured this...
and tried to numerous times. You captured it and I sold it nearly immediately and the member that got it is elated.

No suitable candidates on hand right now, but will do when something comes in.

Really only "new" to me. It's a Nikon Coolpix 950 that I picked off for $91. I'd been waiting for them to get cheap.

Must be your monitor. On mine it's very crisp.

Backup camera, and the current backup, (another Ricoh), I'll be giving away to a YN once I think of some creative way to do it.

Do the newer cameras have the capabilities(settings) to overcome lousy lighting and come up with crisp photos/jpgs?

Since no one else seems to see any loss of focus I guess it must be my monitor. Sorry. Beautiful coin, by the way.

While the 950 is somewhat flexible in various lighting conditions, it still requires decent light to get clear crisp images.

No add-ons to the camera itself, but I do use a copy stand for stability.

Nice pic! You really DO love the new Coolpix, huh?
Well done, nice and crisp here

Thats the slab plastic showing a very slight halo of light. The image is sharp.
what is a copy stand and how is it different from a typical tri-pod?

A copy stand mounts the camera so it points down. Not sure a typical tri-pod would do that.

That copy stand is a lot fancier than mine (which I also bought at B&H). Mine is the CS-7:
