A coin for the masses that is not an embarassment to collect, even though some might make it seem that way.

  • The term "widget" definitely brings to mind the term "elitist", because when a person uses the former term, they are making a statement that they are above collecting coins or other items that are not expensive and/or rare. The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of collectors can not afford "legend" coins or expensive coins at all. Numismatics is supposed to be a "hobby" (at least for some) and just because a collector collects common or inexpensive material does not mean that it is any less to them or brings any less enjoyment.
It is kind of like being a "wannabe" dealer. I see nothing wrong with this as long as this wannabe makes no false representations and treats his clients with respect and fairness. That would be a lot more than is received from many so-called "expert" dealers who couldn't give the time of day to a common collector and would gladly rip off the common collector for a few extra bucks (or as much as he/she could get away with). I could care less if a dealer is a wannabe as long as I get what I paid for and got my money's worth. IMHO

Just remember, if it wasn't for the demand for these so-called widgets, the numismatic world would collapse. I'll bet there'a a TON more dollars spent annually on these coins than the elitist coins.

Widgets are the backbone of the hobby AND the associated businesses.

OK, here's a really long word with spaces in it:

[word]This term has been around for years and simply means that a coin is replaceable and collectible.
People desire coins even with populations in the dozens or hundreds (sometimes in the thousands and
millions) and there's nothing wrong with collecting them. It should come as little surprise that those who
specialize in the esoteric or rare should consider anything which borders on being completely interchange-
    able as a widget or thing-a-ma-bob. [/word]

No one should be insulted by the term since, obviously we can't all collect very expensive coins or moderns. image

And there is nothing wrong with collecting widgets. Most coins are widgets, and most every set that gets put together is made up of mostly widgets. Take away my widgets and my collection becomes very small indeed.

Sheeze, I must live under a rock, but I didn't realize that word had turned into a pejorative. I used it in a post last week to mean just what Conder said above, not as a slur but as a descriptive shorthand.
