GUESS THE GRADE!!

This would be a nice game to play with the PCGS graders. Smoeone will post pics of a coin for the day and the PCGS graders can jump in and give their opinion with comments as to grade. image

Bingo! Although some pics allow for grading, most do not. Our guess the grade posts here are nothing but a party game and should never be taken too seriously. Determining issues like light wear and luster from most pictures is not possible.

Well, when buying on eBay or other online venue or a dealer's site one has to have a lot of faith in the pics proffered.

Buying based upon a pic from an unknown source is the equivilent of buying sight unseen IMO. I would never do it unless I had a return priviledge.

I think it mite be kind of fun to see how consistently the graders can guess. image

Baj: Although you have come up with a fun idea, I am doubtful that PCGS graders would play this game for at least 2 reasons.

    1) Difficulty of accurately grading coins from photos
    2) Potential liability issue that might imply a de-facto PCGS grade

Having said this, I think that it would be a very educational exercize for us forum members, to get some explanation on the thinking process of how the professional graders assess the characteristics of coins to come up with their grades.

Perhaps you should formally submit this suggestion to David Hall on his weekly Q&A Forum.

I thought that Presidential review was sposed to be accompanied by a written opinion/explanation. Too bad they don't have a knowledgeable CS person that you can send your coins to who could offer an opinion after consultation with the grader/s.
