A few thoughts . . . and 10,000

Coins the Forum and Everything . . . (with apologies to Douglas Adams).
This is my 10,000th post here on the CU Forums. I figured it might as well be something thoughtful unlike my previous 9999 posts.
This forum, for better or worse, better I hope to think, has become part of my life. Not my whole life, but part of it. I have met, in person and through cyberspace, many people here. Practically all of them are fine outstanding individuals and I have thoroughly enjoyed my interaction with you all. Be it just shooting PMs back and forth with someone in a foreign country, shooting pool in a dive in Asheville, NC, meeting members at National, and small, shows, or tasting the delicacies at Smokey Bones, it has been enjoyable.
Coin collecting has been an interest of mine since 1964 when my late uncle gave me a brand new 1964 Half Dollar. My older brothers collected coins and it was just a natural progression for me. Today, I am the only one of us fine who still collect. There have been moments of collecting inactivity, like from 1984-1989 when I lived in Thailand, but the ‘bug’ has always been there. It grew strongest when I started getting involved in non-US coins that is the DARKSIDE.
Although Coin Collecting, with a capital C, is always with me, collecting a specific coin is ephemeral (you may have to look up that word spinaker
) to me. I buy a coin, enjoy it for a while, and then sell it. There are some collectors who never sell coins, I can respect that, but that isn’t for me. As many of you know, my collecting interests change every once in a while.
I also believe coins are not only for collectors. Many times I see people complain that a coin has been ‘ruined’ because it was holed, had initials scratched in it, colored, or whatever. I have no problem with coins that have met this fate. Different people use coins for different reasons; the main one obviously is for commerce. If someone wants to make a pendant out of a coin, fine. If another person wants to put his loved one’s initials that also is fine with me. Color a coin to make it a piece of art?, more power to you. I just can’t bring myself to fault someone for ‘damaging’ a coin they own. We, as collectors, don’t own Coins unless we have legal possession of them.
I would be remiss to end this essay without a word about my wife, Kelly. I feel so fortunate to have a spouse who supports my collecting habit, and yes, it is a habit, one hundred percent. Without her, collecting wouldn’t be so fun. How many of us have a spouse who tells you ‘I think for Christmas we should just plan a trip as a gift for each of it. The trip can even be coin related.’ Wow! What a woman! She said our vacation can be coin related. Although, I think her real motive is just too met up with her drinking buddy spinaker, but that is a different story.
To all of you, thanks for the first 10,000.

When I was a Darkside newbie, you sent me complimentary coins to stoke my interest. When I sold you a coin and had missed the fact it was a more valuable date then what I thought---you were the one to point it out and offer more money.

I think it is a classy move, recognizing that your wife is an important part of the enjoyment also - (I also have one of those )- not just tolerant but encouraging as well.
Keep posting and head for another 10000.

Go ahead, Terry- look it up- I'm sure he did, before he typed it!
Bravo, Shroomdude! Conga-rats on your milestone.
I would say, "OK, now what about the customary giveaway (wink wink nudge nudge)", but you've given the forum plenty in your tenure.
