<< <i>You have to remember that the 61-D $1 is the most poorly struck coin from Dahlonega--and that's saying something! >>
I disagree. The worst has to be the 56-D $2.5. But I will agree that the 61-D $1 is the most poorly struck coin by the Confederacy from Dahlonega.

Longacre may have received a promotion and raise today, but I do not think that it was enough of one to score that coin...though I might be wrong.
However, the way you asked the question, makes me feel that there is a twist to this thread, and that the coin is either overgraded as a mint state coin, or undergraded as XF to low AU, especially since it's a Dahlonega mint gold coin...

A little background on this coin: This is the Eliasberg 1861D Gold Dollar Pedigreed to the June 1895 John Clapp Sale of the I.M. Bates Collection. It is the second finest known. The mintage is unknown as the small quantity were all minted by the Confederacy. The coin is listed as #64 in 100 Greatest US Coins.
