  • rvc,
Thanks for noticing the Seaver. It's an obvious Gem Mint card in person. Several guys from these boards have examined the card and can find no reason--aside from when it was graded and who is depicted--that this card wasn't awarded a 10. The thing is perfect. Even the reverse has an unusual amount of ink and is dead-centered and spotless. I'm not saying this to brag about MY possession, but rather to point out the rarity of that card in that condition...regardless of the PSA grade. You obviously have some knowledge of that card's difficulty and recognize that copy as being unusual. The unusual nature of that card is what trips my trigger. The key for me was that I was doing the set over 12 years ago in "MINT" condition, so I was stockpiling ever card I could find and choosing the best of 20-25 NM/MT or better examples to put in a sleeve...and later grade (grading hadn't come into being yet). Today, finding a card like this Seaver would be real chore that would be more luck-oriented than work-oriented. I could go through four binders of vending-fresh 77's back in 1993 at every show and go through common bins at card stores for pack-fresh cards...can't do that much today. You're at the mercy of what someone else pulled and said "this COULD make it...close enough."...etc, etc. That's why we hold onto certain cards with big 'ol fish-eyes and tilts that a few years ago we would have discarded as flawed when they were raw. We wanted a BLAZER! Now it says MINT 9 on it, and we keep it? It's interesting, isn't it?

i will say that grading has affected the quality of cards i tend to hold onto in raw format nowadays.

    << <i>rvc,
Yes, the deal was 77's. The only place I know uncut sheets are located are in Fritsch's warehouse and in Washington state at Terry Ihlefeldt's house...a.k.a. "waxme". We all know what a hoot it can be to buy from that weirdo. I'm not aware of Harrah's placement on the sheet. I would suggest no, but I'm not certain.

    dgf >>

Out of curiousity, what is the story w/ waxme? I had a horrible experience several years ago w/ a 1977 fb vending box. It seems that he/she has an incredible amount of unopened 70's material.

Holy tits! I had the worst experience evr from them! I missed that comment. I bought a 77 fb vending box from them in 2001 aqnd they fcuked me bad.I remember the name now that I see it but they had it listed under LINDA's name. Must be his wife. I bet she left him by now after all those calls...

"Honey, why is EVERYone saying you ripped them off and blaming me because I let you put my name on our account?"

I hate them. They stole $300+ on a 77 fb vendor that was so sbviously searched it was painful. They actually put a wayyy o/c Largent in there, facing the wrong way mind you, and used the defense "You got the best card in the set and you still think we searched it?" They did search it as the vending pattern was nowhere to be found and I knew it, but was too green to be sure.

  • Terry Ihlefeldt's wife was Linda. As you may have guessed, things didn't work out there. Terry is a bizarre human being who has a serious disorder of some kind. He has multiple personalities (I'm being serious here) and can't remember what one "person" says or does. Unfortunately, it seems he is the winner all of the time leading me to believe his "dis-order" is one of convenience and criminal intent.
When he knows he's caught his "twin" brother (that he doesn't have) shows up as well as his lovely wife, Linda.
I had many dealings with him as I kept forgiving him when he would eventually make good on things. When I sent him $500 for some raw 77's he had pulled from vending (some of the best stuff I'd seen) and he took four months and a police threat to deliver them I severed ties forever. I have legit stories that would keep guys riveted here about his behavior, but I'll let others chime in first.
Bottom line, STAY AWAY...FAR, FAR, AWAY!!!
  • Jackstraw & Gang,

A small triumph for me this week I'd like to share. The fourth time for me was the charm. I purchased THIS on eBay a few weeks ago. It arrived safely and has become my new "set" card. I have owned four Yount's in 9 holders now and this is my best to date. The ones I saw on eBay last year were just terrible; chippeed--off-center, etc. When I saw this one -- it sure LOOKED nice. It'll be awhile before this one gets bumped.
The stock is perfect and the centering is awesome front & back. Snow-white borders with the crispest image I've ever seen. The thing that separates this card from my last one is the deep, dark purple in the team name as well as the photo. Ultra-tight registration with no "yellowed" look that the off-registered Yount's have. I figured my last one was as good as it gets until now. This card would honestly not look out of place in a 10 holder. This motivates me to improve other cards that I have written off as "best it's gonna get." I guess I'll never be finished with this '77 set completely.

    dgf
  • ...no, there is no tilt image
  • How the hell did I miss that Yount!!!
Could not find the completed auction for that one??
  • Here's a link

I was absolutely shocked at the closing price. I know when I sell my next Yount, I'll be putting a reserve on it. 80.00 is just ridiculously cheap for that card. Before 2004 there had only been one '77 Yount ever at public auction and it sold for 324.00 on eBay in PSA 9. The 2004 closes were...

    276.01

    188.49

    201.01

    90.00

    76.49

    124.33

    30.01

I recall the $30 yount was absolute garbage from 4SC, if I recall the seller correctly. There hadn't been one in almost nine months when this one came up so I was figuring 150+. I usually don't get too lucky with that stuff. The stuff I want is usually the "hottest" item regardless of what demand seems to be. There could be 100 1988 donruss commons up in PSA 10 and I'll want the George Frazier and it'll go for 150 bucks between me and one more lunatic. This time, I truly lucked out.

    dgf
  • What makes that one so damn tough to find??
As I said I'm working on Brewers team sets from 77-82 and have never seen that one pop up in a 9.
    Can't believe I missed it!

I have bought several high end cards from U.P.S. This guy has been professional all the way. Hope everybody has a good experience as i did. Put him on your "good guy to buy from list"
  • I just finished assembling my son's new SantaFe train and thought I'd check in. Yes, U.P.S. is a solid guy. This is my third transaction there and there will likely be more. This was my first under my new ID.

That's a really nice card Phil. I am still building my AS sets and 77 does present some challenges. Finding a really nice Garvey and Munson of that year has been particularly tough for me. I have a 9 Garvey but it just isn't up to par (guilty of the infamous print line on the left side...that just bugs me). I've also started with Topps all-pro football cards which has been fun.

I hope your son liked his train. That is a great gift! Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!!

I was watching that Yount but saw you as the high bidder so I just watched. I usually check the 77's and 78's but have been slacking lately. I have been really concentrating on the 76 set and though I am not really close to finish I would like to put this together without having to sell for bailing out myself when it comes to bills? This was in my latest submission! PSA 9!

  • Bobby, I just got back my Staub, Harrah, and Kingman from PSA. I now have the 77 all star set all complete. I hit the jackpot when I won a centered raw Kingman on Ebay a few months ago. It came back a 9!(not a surprise, a very strong card) The Harrah and Staub both came back 8's, although I am in the market to upgrade them.

I have some high end 8's in the set that meet what I look for most-Good centering and color.

Jackstraw, sweet card of Bert. I have been comtemplating what my next all star set should be and 76 is right near the top in my consideration. Some real nice cards in that issue.

Here is the breakdown of my 77's:

    Fidrych- 8
    Jones- 8
    Munson- 8
    Bench- 8
    Brett- 8
    Carew- 9
    Morgan- 8
    Concepcion- 9
    Grich- 9
    Rose- 8
    Luzinski- 9
    Leflore- 10
    Kingman- 9
    Foster- 9
    Staub- 8
    Harrah- 8
    Garvey- 8
    Lynn- 9

Nice Campy. That is pretty hard to come by in such nice condition.

Will, I saw you won that Leflore a while back. I wanted that one too. Very nice. Congrats on getting your AS team squared away.

I have all the 77 AS graded 9 or better except for the Munson (Brett and Luzinski in 10). You sure did find a nice Kingman. I remember that one too. I think I even bid on it. Are you doing the 76 AS team as well? I am doing 75 thru 80. It is pretty fun and gives you a lot of variety in your collection (e.g., rookies, HOFs, commons, etc.). If you want to trade your Leflore, let me know. I have duplicate nines in many of my 77s. If you want a Leflore in a 9 and another good card or two in 9 (Rose?) I'll certainly deal. But I understand if the Leflore is not on the market too. image
  • You can't go wrong with the 75-80 all stars. I am trying to decide what set I want to do next, the 76 or 79 all stars.

I tend to like the all star cards that have the "banner" across the top or the bottom proclaiming them to be all stars as opposed to just the star like 76. Although, there are many other pluses to that 76 set to consider.
  • bobbybakerivbobbybakeriv Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭✭
Yeah, the 77s are my favorites for that very reason. Keep up the good work. There are a few guys that collect the same sort of AS as us. It makes it more interesting and allows us all to share our triumphs and commiserate in our defeats.
  • jackstrawjackstraw Posts: 3,817 ✭✭✭✭
I just picked up a PSA 9 of Concepcion and it didn't have a scan so I am hoping it looks like my SGC 96? For 9.99 BIN its was worth the chance. The 76 All Stars in an 8 will be easier and a lot cheaper then in a 9. The Rudi,Campaneris,Blue,Wynn,Tenece,Garvey,Cey and Nettles never are on ebay. The Rose,Bench,Jackson,Carew and Munson will run a few dollars. If your picky you will grow old trying to get a centered print free Rose!

Yeah, I agree on the 76s. 8s are far cheaper and more plentiful. I have been pretty lucky in submitting raw cards but I've also paid a pretty penny for a couple of my 9s. I have 5 Roses in 8 (all submitted by me). That is definitely one tough card to find in great shape. I saw a PSA 9 Rudi yesterday that was moving on up in price. Luckily, I already have it so I didn't feel the compulsion to bid. image

BTW - That Concepcion is awesome and not easy to find either!

BTW there has been 2 Rudi PSA 9 's in the last month. Cincyfan needed one so I tried to snipe it for 60 but wasn't high enough. It was by the scan a far better card then the one last night. The one last night was too tilted for me. It wasn't bad it was just too distracting for my taste? I have a raw one that looks like that.

Just looking at the scan, I'd say you have a decent chance at moving to a 9. It's probably worth a $5 try during one of the specials. It definitely won't go down in grade. I am thinking about cracking out a PSA 9 Cey that I have (it is one of the older labels and looks really good) and hope for a 10. I have 2 Ceys in 9 but sure would like to have a 10! image I know, buy the card not the holder, but I sure do like seeing the words GEM MINT on the labeling of my cards.
  • jackstrawjackstraw Posts: 3,817 ✭✭✭✭
If I was going to pick another set to do it would be the 81 All Stars. I just love them and they are obtainable in 9 10 grade except of course the Lynn which will be next to impossible or was last time I was looking for one? Then I would go to 83 or 79 but thats me. Don't forget there is no AL All Star shortstop in the 79 series?

I've thought about doing 81 too. You can get the cards pretty reasonably. Do you think doing the 81 AS in PSA 10 is possible? I have thought about that year but have never pulled the trigger.

Yeah, the lack of a SS in 79 is weird. Of course, there's a missing AL OF in the 75 set too. I just missed out on a nice 79 Zisk in PSA 9 tonight on Ebay.
  • Bobby, the Leflore is the only 1/1 in my entire collection so I am not up to trading it just yet, although if you wanted to part with your 1/1 76 Carew I could be brought around to the idea! I didn't think so..

I just have Sutter left in my 81 All Stars. Some of the cards are really tough to find in good condition and others are just plain tough to find. I have a lot of 9's but also two 7's (Lynn and Carlton) I am definitely looking to upgrade a fair number of my cards from this year.

Doing the set in PSA 9 would be relatively affordable. The 10's usually don't go for more than $150 or so. Although I don't know if 10's exist of all the cards.

PS: I bid on that 76 Rudi but dropped out when it got higher than I wanted to pay. I picked up a 76 Rose PSA 8 for my brother a few weeks ago for 30 bucks off of Ebay from 4SC. It is sweet! Looked better in hand than in scan. Might have a shot at a 9 actually. I am glad it was in a holder because the corners and edges were so sharp I could have cut my hands on the bare card. I also got a second PSA 8 77 Munson for just $15.00 the other day. Looks to be a mid range example of what is a very tough card.
  • bobbybakerivbobbybakeriv Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭✭
Well, you guys got me thinking about the 1981 set too. I just ordered four 1981 Topps cello boxes from Dave and Adam's card world. I guess I'll try to do the all-stars from that year now. If any of you guys need commons (or non-All-Stars for that matter) from 1981, I'll give them to you for shipping alone. I don't really have any use for them and I get a lot out of being a member of our board. Just let me know what you are looking for in the future and I'll try to help you if I can.

Will, I completely understand on the Leflore. That is a great card. I have two Munsons in 8 as well. I would love to find a gem of that beauty! If I could get that Munson in 10 or maybe Garvey, I'd seriously consider swapping out my 76 Carew. Of course, that is just wishful thinking since these cards don't exist in 10! I have a very nice Rudi in PSA 9 myself. I love that card. The A's certainly were well represented on the AL AS team that year. I am still trying to procure a Jackson in 9. I have three 8s as it stands now. I have all of the 76 AS cards in 9 or better except for Bench, Rose, Jackson, and Munson (I have multiples in 8 for each). I guess this is what makes it fun though...the challenge huh?
  • About half way through building my 81 AS set, I bought a box of cello and a box of wax from Steve Hart. Excellent service and shipping, but that issue is so prone to O/C cards it is unbelieveable. I think only two of the cards from that box rip made it to PSA, one got a 7, the other an 8.

So, all in all, trying to building that set from boxes didn't really pan out too well for me. I did get a fair share of all stars, it was just that most were horribly O/C.

  • jackstrawjackstraw Posts: 3,817 ✭✭✭✭
The 81 All Star set would/ will be tough in a 10 . If I can remember correctly it goes:
    NL: Bibby,Carlton(0 10's),Sutter(0 10's),Bench(0 10's),Garvey(6 10's),Lopes(5 9's 0 10's),Schmidt(7 10's),Russell,Reggie Smith,Kingman(3 10's),Parker(1 10)
    AL: Stone,Gura(1 10),Gossage(1 10),Fisk(2 10's),Carew, Molitor(4 10's),Brett,Dent(6 10's),Jackson,Lynn,???

Those are some real beauties. I sure hope I have better luck than you did Will. Sorry to hear about those boxes. Still, it will be fun to open them up in any case. Wish me luck. image
  • Sweet 81's Jackstraw. I have seen a PSA 10 Garvey go for $143 in the last 6 months and a couple of Brett's and a Carew, not sure what they went for.

The 81 all stars puzzle me because there really isn't much of a rhyme or reason to them. J. R. Richard was the NL starter and is not an all star, but Larry Gura, who didn't even see action in the game, is an all star. What sense does that make?

Since the set seems relatively unpopular, the lesser known players, Gura, Bibby, Dent, Lopes, Smith, etc. don't seem to come up in good condition very often. Actually, other than Brett, Carew, Schmidt, and to a lesser extent Jackson, they don't show up a ton in high grade. It was actually a lot easier finding the 77 all stars than it has been location the 81's
  • bobbybakerivbobbybakeriv Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭✭
That is weird about the pitchers, etc. I didn't know that. I assume the AL is missing one OF just like the 75 and 78 sets? These oversights (and others) by Topps are truly puzzling. Is there any explanation?
  • Brett, Schmidt and Molitor were injured but still have the all star banner for 1981. Steve Carlton didn't pitch in the game and has it as well. That mark in the upper left corner of the Gura drives me nuts. It is apparently on every card since the PSA 10 has it as well.

It has been a fun set to try to complile and upgrade. I have some pretty strong raw examples of Bucky Dent and Dave Kingman. I also have the Lopes and Smith raw that would probably be best described as NM/MT. I have a lot of the other all stars raw, but I don't think they would be worth the postage to mail them.

Let me know if your interested.
  • bobbybakerivbobbybakeriv Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭✭
Thanks Will. I'll keep that in mind. What does your graded 81 AS team look like thus far? Do you have the set done?
  • Here are the grades on my 81 all stars set:

Carew, Brett, Schmidt, Lopes, Smith, Dent, Stone, Parker, Gura and Kingman - PSA 9
Molitor, Bench, Fisk, Bibby, Gossage, Jackson, Garvey and Russell - PSA 8
Lynn and Carlton - PSA 7

I am missing the Bruce Sutter.

I just went through all the cards again in search of a Bruce Sutter rc. Not one! Just some agvice to those of you with 77's on hand, now might be the best ever time to sell those if you have extras you were looking to unload. They are going nutz on eBay for them. The ungraded ones are hitting $20+.

  • Well, I only Bruce Sutter to go for my 1981 all stars. I am hoping that with him getting in the hall, a nice one will pop up on the Bay. There have certainly been a lot more cards of his on there.

I busted a 500 count 81 vending box tonight. The corners were strong but the centering and the tilts killed me. I didn't get a Sutter, but I pulled 14 all stars...all OC or tilted...or both!
