toughest to grade

ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,142 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm interested in the forum's thoughts as to what the toughest coin to grade is. I'm working on the buffalo nickel series in UNC, and I've read this is one of the more challenging series to grade due to the large number of poor stikes.

I agree with Peace Dollars; they always have a weak strike so it's tough to tell a MS coin from an AU.

To me, $2.5 and $5.0 Indian gold coins are the toughest for me to grade and to identify the fake ones.

Look at series' with the least number of collectors, but the existing ones being very entrenched, and this should paint a fairly good composite for you.

I would say the toughest coins to grade are coins that have a strike designation -- at the top of the list of the hardest to grade -- because these coins (in essence) have to get graded twice.

So Mercs with FB, SLQ's with FH, Frankies with FBL, Modern Proofs with CAM/DCAM, Copper with BN, RB, and RD...well you get the idea.

I agree - 2.5 and 5 dollar Indians, hands down. Very challenging to the extent of frustrating.
  • Franklins, Peace dollars can be tough but are usually easier than Franks.

The incused design has no raised rim so the fields get immediate wear. Most top tier TPGS MS60-62 are really AU's with wear in the fields.

The hardest are the indian quarter eagles and half eagles.

I agree with all of you.....

But one thing to consider, from my viewpoint:

Except for some Lincoln Cents, I have NEVER seen a more poorly struck coin then some of the Buffalo examples. GAWD.......on some coins the Bison looks like a blob.

    Just my humble opinion.....
