Sellers: Does this happen to you on E-Bay???

I have a 1973-S Ike PCGS MS68 with a $129.99 BIN and a start price of $99.99 ($8) postage

Another exact same coin has 3 bids over my BIN price ($150+) This seller has 1/3 the feedback that I do.

When you shop E-Bay does price not matter?

Any tips from buyers that would help spice up my auction???

Not an eBay expert....

But the one thing I noticed immediately is that "Eisenhower" isn't listed anywhere in your description, and neither that, nor "Ike", nor "$1" are listed in the title.

If someone is searching for Ike's, your listing might get lost. And anyone browsing by title would be unable to tell what type of coin it was by the title.

Just my two cents.

The listing has a pic in the overall search and is listed only under "Eisenhower" Dollars, so a buyer looking for Ikes would already by in that part of e-bay.

It's a human nature thing if you want my opinion. People get caught up in the auction frenzy and have to win and will pay more for an item then what they had in mind when they first started. The BIN and high reserve auctions don't catch those type of bidders.

Some people don't like toned coins...some people pay a premium for toned coins. Some people like white coins...some don't. Some people search until they find the first one, which they bid on, and don't look for others. Some sellers have shill bidders that drive up price.

.....and sometimes timing and bad luck...can't do anything about that

Don't get your feelings hurt if your coin seems ignored on eBay

I've had coins listed 4 times without a bid at a certain price. Raised the starting price to make up for the previous 4 listing fees, and got a bid 10 minutes after listing the coin. It then sold for way more than I would have asked for it.

Seems as when I search, I don't search by the type of coin, as I search for dates/grades or TPG service within the series of coin that I want, so I already know I am looking at Morgans, Kennedies etc.

I don't know if this would be the case, but will the quotation marks mess up the search if it's for Eisenhower?

I try to squeeze all the possible permutations into a title. If it's a Washington quarter, I'll put those words in as well as 25c, so cover all the search bases.

I thought the other seller's picture was better and showed a more appealing image of the coin. Your's looked like slightly unnatural, like a scan, but some might have concluded that your coin was less attractive.

I also preferred the other seller's terms and conditions section, which was filled with more concrete info. Your's was too brief and too glib.

In particular, your 'I don't sell junk' line isn't helping you, IMO. Thats something you might read on a listing that actually does contain junk.

I will skip most auctions, regardless of how bad I might want the coin, when I see postage/handling of more than $3.00-$4.00.

Seems like my thoughts of total price don't really matter. My shipping is $3.70 more, and the total price is still significantly below the otehr coin.

Must be something in this other coin that I'm missing, as it's now bid up to $430 bucks. A record price for the date and grade.

Oh well, live and learn.

Here is why postage is $8 (from the USPS website):

First class postage (figure 5 ounces) $1.29
Insurance $200 $3.20
Confirmation Signature $1.80 (required by Paypal)
Total USPS $6.29

Packaging + Handling + trip to PO $1.71

total $8.00

OK maybe I streched a few cents, but not much. Those that say it only costs $4 are off. I do not want to loose $$$ on postage. At least I publish the amounts and am very straight forward with all costs.

I ship most coins at $1.99. Out of that I buy delivery confirmation on everything (paypal accepts regular delivery confirmation, not the signature type. They get the signature on the insurance if it us over $100). I add the insurance in later if they want it.
When I am bidding on a coin I always bid much less on auctions with high shipping. I still bid on them, but if it is a $60 item, I might go $45 to $50, and not the full price. I think you will find that happens on most of the auctions on eBay.
As far a searching within a catagory, I NEVER look for a coin starting with the catagory. I always type in keywords. Sometimes I will misspell them and turn up some that get overlooked.
As for reserve pricing, I am a firm believer that they hurt your price. I had a coin up a couple of weeks ago with a $280 reserve. The auction ended at $268. I even emailed the high bidder and he didn't want it. So I relisted the coin (1914-D Buffalo, ANACS AU55) with a low start and no reserve and it is at $295 right now with a day left. Go figure. I think reserves have their place, such as in the case of a coin that is very rare, or that is not collected by many people and will not get a lot of bids or lookers. I have found that collectable coins (Morgans, Buffalo's, Lincoln's, etc.) will find their place regardless of where you start them. I have started $600 coins for $1.99 and not lost a minutes sleep. Just be careful that you don't mispell the title or do something that will cost you lookers.

You really don't lose out because most bidders will factor shipping cost into how much they bid. So low shipping only hurts you in that you have to pay the ebay fee on that extra $. As noted though some people won't bid out of principle if the shipping cost is too high.

Well, if the buyer intends/plans to resell the item its a cost that MUST/should be recovered. Asking/expecting another buyer to in effect pay double shipping mite end up overpricing the coin and result in a no sale.

You should break out the "shipping" cost and the insurance cost separately. eBay lets you do this pretty easily when you're listing your item.

I ship everything for $2 + insurance, and I never "loose" money on postage.

I read the sellers by there shipping price. For example something that should sell for about $100. and they charge $10 for shipping I try to stay away. I feel that if there wanting to make this much on shipping I can only imagine what they are trying to make on the sale. That is why I suggest you bump up your price an extra buck or two and charge the actual cost for shipping. Even losing a buck or two on shipping might tell the buyer you are not out to make a rip. IMO

You've got that absolutely right.

I was shopping the Bay for a quality new jigsaw and found one I was after in the original packaging. So I bid along for a bit as it got higher between myself and two others.

Then I checked the internet for a wholesale tool seller. I found the exact same tool, retail price of $240 but on sale for $119.00 including shipping.

As soon as the eBay auction got very near that price plus shipping, I dropped out. I then ordered it from the intenet tool wholesaler.

The auction ended 2 says later and the winner paid $175.00 plus $18 in shipping as both those remaining guys tried to snipe each other. I got my new saw the very next day via UPS along with a coupon for $20 off my next purchase of $100 or more. My seller also threw in a pack of blades worth another $12.

Sometime eBay brings out the worst in people when it comes to actually looking around for the best deal.

It seems that everyone is jumping his butt for his shipping charge- folks- have ya looked at the price of gas lately?, ever consider what it does cost to package the little booger in order to get it ti you the BUYER in a safe and timely manner?
Sorry I don't think his shipping charges are out of line.

I ship certain items via fed ex or US Priority- my decision. The cost for fed ex is high- but those who buy are happy to get it within one day of paying for it.

Fed ex office is across town- (11 miles), post office is 8, gas is 2.78/gal, my truck burns gas at 18 mpg- so I burn up the fuel before it gets to you- and I have yet to consider the box, the stuffing, etc.-

so I will put in my auctions that if you get said item at $XXX shipping is free.

And to those who have not gotten a said item recently- they go out on Monday- damn health of mine is back on a burner- this hurricane we went thru must have kicked up some garbage from the refineries- I've been sick as a dog as well as my wife- it's time to move to a better part of the nation, maybe one where the fed ex and post office are next to each other and 2 blocks from my house!

I guess it depends on if you are buying to keep or resell. As a collector I can oftimes afford a bit more for S&H if its a nice item that I plan to keep for a long time. Its easy to say factor it into your bid but there are many who don't and I do not think you will win many eBay auctions that way. There are many who have several hundred or more eBay transactions each year so overpaying a few bux on each can add up. If I overpay $1000 over a year's time on eBay I look at it as a pretty nice coin I could have had instead. Since you are charging for extra services required for peepal protection, you shud have a separate shipping fee for those who don't use PP.

I've noticed on Ebay that someone that sells a $500 coin for $5 shipping insured is much rewarded. Some of my best deals have been on those wanting $15 or $20 for an item like that, most won't bid at all when shipping is too high.............
