1804 1$ Giveaway, with 2nd place consolation

BlindedByEgoBlindedByEgo Posts: 10,754 ✭✭✭✭✭

In honor of all of the recent Ebay scams, and because I like you guys so much for putting up with me, I'm going to do a giveaway.

These are the beauts that I will ship to you, for free, if you win my competition:

Oh baby, a couple of real gems here! All you have to do is:

For 1st place, you get the "1804 dollar 'Bay special" if you are the first to guess the last country and city in which this actual coin circulated, and

For 2nd place, the response that makes me laugh the most gets the Seated Dollar. Completely subjective.

With these beauties, I expect precisely zero replies, hence I shall save my shipping costs. Participate anyway, if you must image

The final giveaway will be announced next Monday, Halloween, not so much because these coins are scary (they are), but that I'm going fishing in the High Sierra (that's in California, for those of you from Rio Linda) and will not return until then.

Have fun. I'm off to kill trout.

Given your avatar, I figure it had to be Smyrna, GA (USA). It was part of an estate that Ms. Estatedoctor was fortunate enough to liquidate. They look good to me.

Now, now... You must know by now that we don't end sentences in prepositions... Unless you're from Savannah, GA.image

I think that "circulated" is clear enough, in that where it was last used as "money". This, for you YN's, is a great example of Gresham's Law in action.

  • I figured it must be Baghdad, Iraq since Miss Liberty probably visited there to help out with restoring the Iraqi peoples liberties.

Meg Whitman recently spent it on a trip to Hong Kong after she bought it from a Power Seller that wouldn't give her a refund because he clearly stated in the auction that he doesn't know anything about coins.

Hong Kong, British Colony, later province of China. I HAD to cover myself depending on WHEN you found this 1804 piece. image

  • Tokyo, Japan.

They were last used in China, Korea and Japan. So I'll go with Tokyo.

These coins were terminated by the US in 1887 but the final destruction of the last of them being hoarded in Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused large lizards to become upset and Godzilla has taken it out on the Japanese ever since. image

As far as problems with Ebay, I've got none, per se. I was referring to some of the scams brought to light on this board (which is what attracted me to this forum to begin with). I love the way that these guys try to stay on top of the most outrageous, one of which involved a counterfeit 1804 dollar... Hence this giveaway.

    The picture is crap, because:

I took it freehand, with my old Canon ELPH, because:

My selfish, bratty daughter woudn't let me use her nifty Canon Digital Rebel that I bought her for her birthday. Ungrateful bratimage

Also, since we already know that these are, um, reproductions - who cares?

  • I don't think that 1804 ever circulated as money.

Thanks to all who participated in my first, might I add, very GENEROUS giveawayimage

Coinhusker1 guessed correctly that this coin came from Beijing, China. A fellow that I met at a swap meet (Chinese, oddly enough) said that his father had brought a bagful of 'em over about 20 years ago, and that they had circulated in the smaller towns as currency for exchange. I don't know, nor did he know, how they were valued ("they" being an assortment of counterfeit coins in the same size range: Seated Dollars, F/H dollars, British Crowns, Reals and assorted darkside coins). They are all some sort of Nickel-Silver-ish base metal.

LastExitInNY made me laugh because he was the first to sound so forlorn and hopeless... Which I suppose, he was (although I've seen stranger things come out of Washington, D.C.image

Thanks again for the excuse to share. Yep, I'm a giver alright - give, give, and give again 'til it hurts...

    Happy Halloween!
  • You think I sounded forelorn then? You should have seen me when read I it was a reproduction! LOL Either way, generous and thanks again! image
  • Last place the 1804 buck saw was Hong Kong. Something funny? Hmmh...Your handle fits me well. I'm so blinded by my ego that it's hard to see myself in the mirror. Not funny yet true. TeeHeeHee.image
