Penny errors

Here are some pennies I recieved in circulation. The first (1974) is a clashed die. Look closely you can see the memorial from the reverse. and the outline of Lincoln is on the reverse, but the picture of that didnt turn out very well. On the second picture (1930) the 0 is filled in, or filled die. Do you think its worth much? Tell me what you think

i am not sure if they have any value beyond a dollar or so.
    i am not an expert.

what is interesting is the fact you check your pocket change for errors. ;-)

Well finding a wheathead in change was a bit odd for me, as I dont find many of those.
As for the '74 I was filling in a whitman folder, and looking at it I noticed it was a clashed die.
( by the way the clashed die is much deeper in person than what the picture shows (just letting everyone know) ) image

Penny errors don't have much of a premium unless they are a well known error.

I found about 5 wheaties in about a month. It pays to have a customer who is a mostly cash biz as your biggest account. They drop tons of change on the floor and dont bother with the pennies or the sacs for that matter. Is that considered stealing I wonder? Oh well image

Pay attention to what wjd283 posted. Not that it isn't fun finding oddities, but values are based on RED BOOK error listings. Only a few have found their way to lofty heights in the numismatic food chain.

The blob in the 0 of the 1930 is from a die chip, not a filled die. No real premium. I mention it because I feel it is important to try and use the correct terminaology in order to prevent confusion, and I is best to get a newbie corrected early before bad habits get set in.

Depending on the severity of the die clash, "Prisoner" Cents.............those that show the reverse as "Bars" across Lincoln..........are a collectable coin to some.

Values vary, but the most severe clash was once listed for $8.95 in an ad I saw.

What everyone is saying is true. Unless it is a well known error it just don't cut the big bucks. At one coin show I go to there is a guy that has vertually hundreds of what looks like Lincoln errors. I collect them myself and have about 6 boxes of them, in 2x2's, labled as to what I think they are but no price guess because of no way to know. Filled in letters and numbers are really common. Slight double dies aren't worth much either unless they've made the Red Book. Offset are the most common I've found and in so many varieties there could never be a listing of them all. Coppercoins does a pretty good job of listing all the errors of each date of Lincoln Cents and I'll bet he isn't even near the half way mark. Check out his book for the ones you find. Unfortunately the book cost more than most of the coins you will find.
