1974 Baseball Thread

Well ....not sure if somebody started one of these already but let me try and get it started.Maybe I can lure some old timers out of hiding.
A few years back, right about this time, I had completed the top 74 set for the first annual Psa registry awards. To show how far things have progressed, that set doesnt even make the top 5 all-time sets anymore(the one I retired was an already broken down version).Im sure it is similar with other years as well. When I first started the set,74s had not even been validated and weighted.Carlos Aponte(great guy) was one of the few others who was building the set and he probably put the request in for it. At that time if you wanted certain cards, you needed to find them and submit them yourself although Gaspipe and BBCE were pumping out high quality graded 74s and selling on ebay and were a terrific source.I dont think LSD and 3 sharp corners were mass submitting there high volume overgraded cr*p quite yet. I would pick up every high grade raw 74 set I could get my hands on, which I believe was similar to the Great Frank Bakkas strategy with 72s.Most of the cards would be submitted and put into the set and trade or sell the dups with other collectors.
Anyways,to make a long thread even longer, it was a very fun experience. I eventually broke up the set and probably built it again a second and third time in graded form. The 74s are my favorites. Many of my cards ended up in some of the great sets that followed:Scott Wetzels(are you still around?), Ken "74s rock" Owens(sideplate),Wayne Ellis's unbelievable set,Mark Koll, and a guy who seemed to always be the winner of many hi grade 74 auctions the last 2 years...Gary. Gary is the current top dog and if you wanna see an incredible set, then take a look at what he has put together.Carlos(carkim) I believe put his set in an major auction and was one of the first to sell a 70s complete graded set.Luxurywines bought it and sold off the 9s,replaced with 8s and then flipped the complete set.If I left anyone out I apologize.

Now I couldnt completely be without 74s so I decieded to build a raw 74 set with the nicest cards I could find and store them in Cardsaver 1s. I would put this set up against any set in the world with the exception of maybe Scott Bradshaws. If you are familiar with that guys raw sets then you know what Im talking about.I had very strict criteria for this set.I recently sent in some of these beauties and I will include a scan or two of my favorites.Let me know what you think.

  • Wow,
How could I forget. Todd Schaffer was also one of the original 74 set guys who completed a 100% set and Steve(Machodoc???) put together a very impressive set at one point. And rumor has it that a guy with a pretty sharp eye for cards is building an SGC set.
  • I too like the 1974 set and often feel it is the Rodney Dangerfield of the early 1970's issues. I don't know where my set ranks right now, probably #3 or #4 on the registry, but I have sent it to Mastro and it along with nearly all of my Kellogg's sets will be in the December auction.

dakota, why do you keep breaking up the sets if you like them so much? Don't you want a set to take to the grave? image

    Gentlemen,
A friend of mine has a store and he offered me a tomato box of about 4,500 commons from 1974 for $90.00 There were about 15 Washington Nat'l League cards. The majority of the cards are probably nrmt to nrmt-mt. Is this a good deal?
    Thanks,

Never met a Vintage card I didn't like!
  • Oooh, I don't think this was Topps specific, so I'll chime in. 1974 has often been considered one of the toughest - if not the hardest - OPC year. Until this year, I had only seen one complete set for sale in 10+ years. Low POPS too, but probably due to Rodney Dangerfield syndrome. High grade Yaz and Rose (among others) are difficult to find.

Ahh, 74s, those do hold a special place in my heart, they were the first cards I ever bought in pack form. Could by 10 packs for a buck. Was never fond of the design, but thought the some of the action shots were cool. Good luck to all on this one.

I just started building my 74' set in 8 or better w/no qualifiers. I lost a few 74' lots on Ebay last week. Im glad to see a thread dedicated to 1974s.
  • I suscribe to the Scott Bradshaw method of raw set building and the 74's are one of the easier years to compile a true mint raw set , I have to surmise it's because they don't enough love.
The Bradshaw raw sets are legendary, I have always wondered if he "cheated", by cracking 9's and 10's for his raw sets. They are that nice!!

Downtown1974> At the risk of spamming the thread, I currently have a lot of 1974s on eBay right now which end on Saturday. I'd guess there are over 100 and are split pretty evenly between 8s and 9s. Another 65 or so 1974s went off to Newport Beach today.

Straw> Bradshaw usually brings his super-high-end sets to shows, but don't know how interested he is in selling. Everything I've heard is that he asks absolutely ridiculous prices for those sets. Perhaps someone who knows him can shed some more light on this.

I have both a raw 1974 and raw 1976 set that I built in the 1980s. Not sure the conditions, probably all over the place with nothing too high end. I have on my list to inventory each of them and sell them come springtime. If I recall correctly, I think I traded over (1000) 1975 cards I had to build these two sets since the years (73-76) were my prime collecting years as a kid.
  • I'm building a 74 set through the SCG registry in SGC 84 or better. Its a really nice set and I'd love to hear from others what their experience is with this set.
  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭✭✭
He once told me he'd sell his best raw 1971 set for $30k. I've looked through some of his premium binders he keeps behind the tables. I managed to find a handful of NM-MT cards in those books, mostly high pop cards. At 50% SMR in raw form, I could buy them cheaper already graded PSA 8 or 9. So I usually walk past his table unless the show is really, really thin on vintage raw material.
  • I asked Scott about his raw 1974 set about 18 months ago and was told the asking price was $22,000. Frank
Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10.

  • Just in case you '74 guys did not see it, Gary Nusbaum has his # 2 set up for sale on eBay. It is the #4 current finest and is called “The RB Set". If you have never worked with Gary in the past, let me assure you he is first class. I have had dozens of off eBay deals with him and he is as straight up as it gets. This is an awesome set if you have not checked it out.

Cracking a PSA 10 for a raw set is undoubtedly about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Talk about not liking your money. On another thread, people were saying how grading a complete 1988 Donruss set is a waste of money. Then I hear of something like this. Wow. I'm assuming this is a joke but I'm sure some gazillionaire out there has probably already done it.

Edited to add: Sorry about hijacking the thread, I just had to respond to that.
  • There is a nice high grade set available in the current Mastro auction. Over 85% complete of the master set. ALL in PSA 9 grade !!!!

    Is it yours Chris?
  • yes, my 1974 and 1970 baseball sets are both in the current Mastro auction (lot 1573 and 1570) I never thought I would sell either, but an oppertunity has presented itself and I can't pass it up. I know I'll take a loss on the cards, but I will have a better return on the new venture.

I think I was just outbid on the 74, I'm still high on the 70 I think.
  • Good luck. Just think of the break up potential !! I still have both sets regestered and ALL the pics for the 1970 set. If you want any pics for the 74 set, just ask.

  • I have noticed there is a fair amount of activity lately both on E-Bay and with the PSA set Registry with people adding cards and upgrading. Its nice to see as we are starting to see alot more graded material for sale recently which really helps. Lets keep this thread rolling as I would love nothing more than to see those of us trying to build this set be able to help one another out.

  • I have worked closely with Scott. His raw sets are the best cards that he has come across in 25 years of collecting. He has started to submit selected cards for grading at the July National and he has been getting many 9's and some 10's on his submissions.

He has sold raw master sets in the past. Some of his sets from the early to mid 50's have been sold for his asking price.

Collectors usually smirk at the asking price but the buyer could very well be the winner if they had all of the cards graded.

His sales do not come from the sets but from the raw singles that are not good enough to make his master sets.
