How's this washington? (big pics)

mgoodm3mgoodm3 Posts: 17,497 ✭✭✭
I have been experimenting with this coin as it's one of the toughest coins to get right. There's a lot of luster, but like most relative moderns, the coin is very glossy and shiny. There is a little darkness at 12 oc'lock that I can get rid of with a reflector, but the pics just don't look right to me with it, so I left it out. The picture is slightly dark overall , but if I push the exposure any more, I get overexposure on some of the relief. what do you think? What's the grade?

I like the coin a lot! I'm not a Washington specialist, so no clue to the grade, but she sure is pretty! Is that some recut date action on the right hand side of the 4?

My guess would be MS-66. There are no significant marks, but just enough to take it out of anything higher. If it were not for the hairlines on Washington's jaw and the mark in the right field, I'd go MS-67.

AU58? Is that rubbing on the cheek and on r and l sides of field?

Could be either MS66 or MS65. Some tics in field at 4 o'clock, some minor marks on portrait (cheek, nose, and at hairline), tics on neck. Can't tell if that's scratches of ???? just behind George's curls. Though the individal marks are small, they add up.

Even if what you cite is a rub, you would never seen a coin like that in an AU-58. Remember you are supposed to grade with a 5X glass. This is the kind of view you get from a scope.

    MS 66 is my guess.

Try two lights -- one at 12 o'clock and the other at 9 o'clock.

    Have fun...Mike

p.s. like the second shot better, too. Where's the reverse?

The second pic seems to be better. MS-65. -Dan

    Yeah,

2nd pic much better you can see it's not rubbing in the fields. I can see MS65 here because of the dings on the neck, hair and the field.

Yeah, I know, but it's harder to photograph. This coin is the toughest coin to photograph that I own. I have to get a good pic of the rev now.
