The 2004 Platinum proofs are pretty hot right now. Several dealers are bidding $4,000 a set when the rest go for less then $2000(2005 excluded). I would venture to say you could get $5,000 for a set without too much work. I have a 2004 1/4 oz proof in an NGC proof-70 holder on ebay right now. I'd be a happy camper if it went for $1,595. It's at $1,009 with 5 days to go.
Guys, there are NO examples of a US minted type coin with a total type mintage of 5,035 or less with a current market price in a reasonable collector grade (63 or better) less than $1,500. Can someone find an exception? This is also the first seated liberty design to come out of the mint since 1891. These coins have a date with $2500 each in the next 5 years......nobody liked the Jackie in 1998 either.

Makes no sense, the mintage figures don't matter. The question is availability. ALL five thousand of the platinums are still around. There are many 19th century coins in unc with an AVAILABILITY of less than five thousand that sell for cheap in MS63.
Going by your logic, delicacies such as 1895 unc dollars should also be cheap, since they were minted by the thousands.
Of the 5,000 or so 2004 quarter oz proof platinum coins minted, about 4,000 are wrapped up with three very expensive siblings in the four peice sets. That leaves about 1,000 single coins sold, and I would say that most are sitting with individual collectors, not dealers. That's why they so rarely show up on Ebay (the 1995 W-point special proof silver eagle shows up more!) and why they fetch so much money.

1995-W SAE PR69DCAM's go for about $5000 now and the total issue was around 30,000. I don't have the figures in front of me but I think the 04-W plat denomination with the largest mintage was only around 6000 coins? Most of these were sold in the four coin sets.
I'm surprised the 2004-W Plats don't trade for more. I agree that most of these are in the hands of collectors and not dealers. That's proabably why they are rarely seen for sale.
Please note that I said TYPE coin....if you take the total population for all years for the type of issue in question they sum to over 4800 in all the cases I am aware of. If you have a case that proves my statement wrong let me know because thats why I asked the question.
I had bought all the previous quarter ounce proofs but the mint's price went up so much for this one I decided to wait and grab one in the aftermarket. Big mistake!
What really makes me mad is last fall there was one on a ebay live auction that I bid $350 for and it went for much less but I guess there was a problem with the live auction and my bid didn't get processed.
The quarter will more than likely over time end up with simmilar valuations to the unc Jackie Robinson because it's rarer with twice the material content value and isn't ugly. If you can find one for under $1200 buy it because long term you will be OK.
Send an e-mail to this outfit and ask if anyone will sell you a quarter 04. Tell them your plight if anyone can help you believe me they can if they want to.
It has a low mintage but demand isn't very strong for these and each year the mintage seems to go down. If that happens the 04 price will drop back to those of the other issues.
I have a single 2004 $50 Platinum bought from the U.S. Mint last year. If there are only a thousand of the singles it may be better to keep it in the OGP rather than submit to NGC or PCGS. It will only grade at best a 69.

Tell that to the modern bashers. That's their entire argument.

I have a growing collection of 1/10 oz Platinum Eagles (2001-2004) with the 2005 on the way..... The 1/10 oz coin cost me $210.00.....
The platinum coins are all expensive, but I think a good long term purchase.....
