Now that I have defined my goals as a collector and began paying attention to what I enjoy I am having a blast. I was all over the place when I first started, now I am nearing completion of some sets I created, and am into the Dansco Albums. A new project is on the horizon, and I couldnt be happier. My goal is to maximize my enjoyment, while minimizing my output.
There is no wrong way to collect coins. I have found out that when I mention I collect coins (never saying gold though in person), I find out others do also!
It seems everyone has a coin or token as a keepsake.
I was going to say obsession, and then I read your post.
So now I'm torn, I think I still prefer obsession as addiction implies that it controls me.
I'm quite sure for many it is an addiction, but for many, obsession should cover it.
Really now, would you rather tell your wife that you have an addiction or an obsession?
"Lenin is certainly right. There is no subtler or more severe means of overturning the existing basis of society(destroy capitalism) than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose." John Marnard Keynes, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, 1920, page 235ff
Having Fun and Enjoyment is what it's all about. With today's technology it's even more fun than I could have ever imagined when I was a kid. Quite the hobby that it is!
Enjoying time at home with the family now is my full time passion.
You can find great people in just about any hobby. You can have a hoot pursuing just about any collectible. There are things to do with your money which will often pay higher rates or return. Many people have no interest in collecting at all and can spend their time and energy in other productive or enjoyable pursuits.
But if you want to collect coins, study history, learn about metallurgy and statistics. If you desire to have reasonably priced artifacs of any period of our country's or world his- tory and to be able to share this with large numbers of people then it's hard to beat the only hobby where one can spend his money and have it too. It's quite a hobby.
Its the one hobby where I feel I'm not throwing my money away. I especially enjoy the combination of history and art that is offers. And those toned coins drive me wild !!

I've been a collector in many hobbies over the years, and this hobby is by far my most enjoyable!
But I like it anyways.......
Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
It's quite a hobby and I'll never quite quit.
