What does the Mint think of us?

Coin collectors / numismatists? Do they think we are just a bunch of crazy wackos? Any inside stories out there?

They think we have too much money to spend & that no matter how bad customer service is we'll keep coming back.

Someone to buy anything they make so they can support their own hobbies. They go home each day laughing at us dummies.

They don't think... that's the problem. They don't have to. Can you say MONOPOLY.

Well, regarding the monopoly comment, we can all stop buying. But then I guess the dealers will have a field day.

What happened to the good old days when the mint would make fantasy pieces just for collectors?

My view is yeah, the mint is making a fortune off of us with so many design changes and customer service is spotty at best. But at least they are trying interesting things and soliciting input from the numismatic community.

They think that if they throw 4 coins in a box and sell it for $19.95, people will gobble 'em up.

...like a many cogged machine for turning coins into real money. image

Seriously though, they have been paying more attention to their customers for ten years
now. Phillip Diehl started the process and it seems to be ongoing. Their greatest problems
now days is their refusal to provide products for which there is little profit and their inability
to make further gains in quality.

There are likely to be more improvements but then they may become victims of their own
success as they churn out an endless array of products and ruin the market.

Insightful comments. But I'm confused, wasn't the question about the US Mints opinions of collectors. Why is everyone responding as if the question was about Coin Dealers opinions about Collectors?

    Ummm....OK....nevermind.

They think of us just the same as our elected officials do.

We are nothing more than revenue enhancers.

    Sad, but true.

I have to admit that the hobby was reborn when I went to the mint site and saw alot that caught my eye. The Marines coin, Silver Eagle and a roll of Sacs were my first purchases and I got everything pretty fast. The Marines coin was delivered in less than a month. I hope they think I am still all new customer so they keep up the fast shipping image

While it may be a little off the subject, something I find ironic, is that the mint seems very concerned about quality control so as to severly restrict the release of truly rare and collectible coins, (i.e. double dies, mules, and the occasional exra leaf,) from reaching the marketplace - yet by doing so, they create great demand for these types of coins when they do get out.

Just had to get to triple digits tonight, so I'll weigh in hereimage

What does the Mint think of us?

One heckuva lot more now than in the multiple instances that they were in fear that coin collectors would cause a shortage of change for the use of the masses.

And they must have HATED us when they put out the "Special Mint Sets"... anything but special.

    Suckers!

Well, maybe not. They depend too much on collectors to place them among the top businesses in the nation. But it's only an image thing. I think that the Mint could care less about true quality in numismatics.
