Will the Astro's make the same mistake again?

Why in God's name would you pitch to one of the best hitter's in the league, in that situation?

  • I had the same question a little while ago, and in my opinion, let the crowd boo as loud as they can, because if the same scenario comes up in one of the next two games, hell no it won't happen again.

In Garner's defense he was 0-4 and you have your stud closer on the hill. If you walk Pujols you move the tying run into scoring position. The Cards had not homered all series, I don't think I would of walked him either.

What else could you do? walk the bases full? what needed to be done and Im sure everyone knows is the guy (Lidge) needed to throw his FASTBALL.

    Good for you.
  • I understand why he pitched to him anyway. But who expects Pujols to go 0-5 in any game, plus Lidge struggled to close the game before and showed signs of starting to struggle again. I agree that since he was going to pitch to him, a fast ball should have been thrown too, because everyone and their mother including Pujols was expecting changups the whole time.

I guess the debate doesn't really matter though about last night. But I will say if the same scenario happens again, Pujols won't swing the bat.

If it happens again you can bet your A$$ that Lidge throws his 97 mph fastball and not a hanging slider!

That way if he gets beat, he gets beat with his best pitch.

    Good for you.
  • By one of the best fast ball hitters playing today.

Now don't get me wrong, I grew up in Houston, and have been and will continue to be a die hard 'Stros fan, but damn this is getting old. That and I just don't like Garner.

I agree wolfy, however Lidge is the closer, logic dictates you do not walk a guy and load the bases. a wild pitch, passed ball, hit batsmen, and a walk ends the game. with the bases loaded the pitcher now has to be real fine with his pitches with 3rd open he can be cute. If 1st base is open then I would prolly walk him.

Those pitches he threw to Edmonds is what got him into trouble.

Lets not get crazy here. The biggest mistake Lidge made all night was WALKING Edmonds.

I see what you are saying, BUT, if he loaded the bases, and any of those things happened that you mentioned, the game would NOT be over yet. It would have made it 4-3 and now with 2 runners still in scoring position. Only now, you can't afford to give up ANY base hit due to the game tying Edmonds on third, the winning run Pujols on second.

Atleast with walking Pujols, you could have afforded to give up a long single to Sanders, which would have been the much prefferred matchup to Lidge.

But I sure as hell agree that walking Edmonds was the biggest screwup.

Agreed. He certainly wasn't trying to pitch around him either, he just couldn't find the plate. Eckstein deserves credit as well for keeping the inning alive with his good AB that produced the single.
