"What did I buy?"

Placed a bid on this only to bookmark it. Thought it was real. What is it and who made it? Thanks Andy

You bought an Edward VIII medal. These are made for all the commonwealth countries. As you know, Edward VIII didn't reign very long. Something about an American woman. image

A medal? image Rather a modern pattern or fantasy coin, not medal. Indeed they exist for all Commonwealth countries.

BTW, if you get the English version of it, with a slightly different portrait and listed in Spink, I'll pay you three times your buyprice to get it. image

Yes, a fantasy piece is more accurate.

One of my pet peeves... the plethora of so-called "patterns" that are in fact nothing more than modern copies, counterfeits, or fantasy pieces. These are not patterns by any stretch of the imagination. A pattern precedes or at the very worst coincides with actual coin of the realm, not 50-100 years after the fact.

On the upside, it's not like you spent a fortune on it.

Oh, and I wouldn't trust any seemingly low mintage figures given in these auctions. When they run out, they just stamp more.

Sorry, these auctions annoy the hell out of me, as they are written to dupe the unwary...

    Yea, verily.

I get tired of seeing them in auctions listed as "patterns."

No real coins or patterns were struck with Edward VIII's likeness, save for a few test pieces from the home country. Syracusian (and I, for that matter) would love nothing better than to get one of the originals!!

The most "common" piece is the British 12-sided threepence, which was struck in small numbers to test slot machines, given that it was a completely new coin that year. Some of these bits slipped out and into circulation. They are tough to spot because the common 1937 3d bears the likeness of his brother, George VI, who faces the same direction and whose portrait was designed by the same person. The portraits look almost identical!

The reverse of some of the 3ds is different from the thrift plant reverse ultimately used on the George VI pieces.
