Once again WP you are showing yourself to be here for no other reason than a drama queen, screaming 'look at me! look at me!'
You post nothing to add to discussions. You post solely to attempt (and I use that word lightly with regards to you) to insult me. You really don't belong...kind of like it's been your entire life, huh WP?
I enjoy the Radatz and Wilhelm historians. Radatz blew them away and Wilhelm stymied hitters with his knuckleball. The oversized catcher's mitt was created due to him. Until a few years back, Wilhelm held the record for most innings pitched. Joe Page didn't suck either... he was the grandfather of feared relievers.
Not that he was the best ever, but I always thought of Sparky Lyle as the reliever who established the notoriaty of relief pitchers in the modern era. He was fun, and fun to watch. Regards.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
I live near Chicago and have been a life long White Sox fan. We were in Comiskey Park for Little League Day and I sat in amazement as I watched Dick Radatz strike out one batter after another. The amazing part was that we could not see the baseball, all we could do was hear it hit the catchers mitt. In all my years since I have never seen anything like it. He is the only pitche outside of Koufax that I have ever seen in person that when they were on were absolutely unhittable.
U had to love baseball just to get to take the subway from Queens to the Bronx to go see the Yankees.
The only thing that "blew" about the Yankees was getting there! Gee, growing-up in high school (a million years ago!), even my jock strap had pinstripes on it!
rbd
P.S. I loved the ECK-man! Sparky was cool too, when he was a reliever (I even thought Maddux could have been one of the "all-time best" relievers! Who knows for sure?), but with close to fifty years of baseball experience, Rivera is my guy!
edit: Todd Jones: For "comeback player of the year!" (give a reliever some relief! LOL!)
I personally think that Rollie Fingers and Dennis Eckersley have to be pretty high on the list. Just an FYI but Trevor Hoffman is quietly inching up that list too. Granted, he still has a long way to go but he could pass Lee Smith as the all-time saves leader if he has another 43 save season in 2006 (he is sitting on 436 to Smith's 478).

Oops, sorry wrong thread.
If you put a "short list" together of the "Best Relief Pitcher Ever",
If you don't have Rivera on your "short list" of relievers, you don't know diddley about baseball!

P.S. Did I spell diddley right?
