Paul Sims,Inc. Has anyone....

Ever purchased any of his product?

I keep seeing his ad in the rag mags and am curious- I want to try picking up some raw 83/84-S from him or one of the other rag sellers.

Is this outfit good or bad.

If bad- can someone recommend a decent non gouging dealer that has nice raw Morgies.

I'm gonna try David n Co. one more time.

I will never buy raw coins from him again. Possibly bullion but nothing else.

If you want "to have nice day," turn the page and ignore his ads.

  • Wooo- ok.
What aboot Rich Stiles or John Sarosi?
  • In my experience, his "choice uncirculated" means AU. Better deals to be had elsewhere. Stick with a dealer who adheres to numerical grading rather than vague statements of opinion that can be widely interpreted.

I've done business with Rich Stiles person to person at the shows. He seemed OK to me, but I've never done business with him through the mail. I don't know anything about John Sarosi.

My only dealing with Paul Sims was about two years ago, when he offered an 1802 half dime (raw) in his full page ad in a numismatic weekly. Both myself and another well known half dime specialist contacted him to inform him that his 1802 was, in fact, a counterfeit. He responded with a rather nasty "Mind your own @#$!& business!", and left the bogus coin on the market until some unsuspecting collector bought it.

There was a thread about John Paul Sarosi on the board several months ago wherein I recounted a story about him absolutely unloading on a Bust dime collector once he determined that he was "...one of those @#$!& variety collectors". The collector (a good friend) immediately stood up and left John's table, but that was not enough for Mr. Sarosi, who continued to spew profanities and foul language across the bourse floor until security had to threaten to remove him unless he could regain his composure.

I would not choose to do business with either of these 'upstanding' dealers.

MORGANHUNTER2 - You've been on the forums long enough to know the answer to your questions, but if you don't, just do a search on any of the names you mentioned. You'll see plenty of opinions on them.

Yeah, but they won't sell you a BU for AU money like Paul Sims will..... image

One of my first lessons in coin collecting was the unfortunate purchase from Paul Simms.
  • Barry: I know- I have checked, but every now and then ya just get the itch. Well the itch for the 2 are not set in stone for me.

I know that RC of NH has good quality choices, and I'm gonna peruse their website.

I was hopin to grab a few raw and shock myself if the came back hittin heavy moola.

I just packaged a batch that I am shippin to Anacs, and a batch is going to NCS then NGC, hopefully they come back the way I hope they do.

I have 3 morgies right now that are raw that I want to submit to uncle david- but I'm short 2 for the minimum- that is why I was hoping to get a couple of raw 83/84-S to send.

oh the 3 raw- 85CC I feel will kick 65, and 85-O that has a lock on a 66, and an 86-O that if the grading gods are lookin out for me should come back as a 64.

so maybe a call to Jack Beymer?

I didn't buy from Sims but another 2-pager CW advertiser last year. From that experience, I wouldn't recommend buying cheap "BU" coins to fill a minimum order to PCGS. You are likely to get body-bagged for cleaning or if they do grade, expect a low-to-mid AU.

I live in MD and while in a shop near me recently I wanted to look at in the AU range for a type coin and was told, "We don't have many of those. We live near 3 of the largest mail order dealers and they buy all of our original AU coins, dip 'em, and sell them as BU". I believe it.

I bought raw, sight-unseen "BU" gold coins from Paul Sims in the early 1990's and got sliders. AU at best.

RUN Forrest, RUN!! AWAY from them as FAST as possible! Unless you want to be the pooch that gets screwed next. Just another warning! Why do you think they HAVE to place such big ads? My warning is: those whom have to yell the loudest, usually have to because those nearest them have already learned to sstay away! Ray

I've had very bad experiences with Paul Simms. I would stay away.
  • I've heard that they're really bad, as are most of the dealers who take out the really huge ads in the coin publications.
  • Stay away from John Paul Sarosi also...he overgrades to beat hell.

Hi, I bought from one of his adds 2 years ago to start my walker collection. "40 differant walkers in VG- Fine condition". Got the set and true to form, they were in the grades advertised, BUT!!!!, They had more rim bumps/dings than Houston has pot holes...........As I upgraded and completed this collection, I have relenquished these not so round coins to the scrap silver rolls that I would not sell to anyone unless they knew they were buying scrap...........I usually read CW on the loo and his pages are now great for the 'clean up'. He will not see a cent from me again...............Rick

Edited to add......this was from Paul 'the simulated grade' Sims

About 6 years ago, as a beginning coin collector, I bought one of their two “BU” Peace Dollar introductory deals. I don’t remember the exact numbers, but I sent them a check for something like $25. The following week I get the check back with a letter saying “oh by the way these are now $29”. I’m still po’ed at that but thankful now since it turned me off enough not to continue buying from them.

They got me too. Cleaned IHC and a dipped beyond belief Walking Liberty Half. I sent it all back. Kept some state quarters.

  • When I was a brand spankin' newby I bought a 32D Washie and an Isabella, both "Gem BU", yeah right, I found out later both were cleaned. I just didn't know better. I spent about $650 for the pair. Fast forward 3 years and a local dealer has a guy who needs a decent Washington so bad for an album filler that he buys both from me for $600. Otherwise I'd have lost my ass.

Years ago me and a few other dealers decided to try and fix the problem of these muti-page advertisers who overgrade and ruin the hobby for many people. Some of the other dealers were Dick Wagner of Tipsico, Steve Estes, Great Lakes Coins, and many others. We saw that you could not go after these guys unless you had a good case of fraud - seems they have every right to interpret the grades as they seem fit. Booo!

We started a group called NANA - National Association of Numismatic Advertisers. Basically it was supposed to be a positive organization which would promote ethics among advertizers and teach collectors to avoid bad dealers. It worked for awhile, but no one had the time or energy to promote it so everyone would learn to stay away from these overgraders. I required lots of collector education.

The next best thing is to spread the word on bad dealers who refuse to make a bad transaction right. I'm not saying to pull a "Beepy" everytime you don't get a deal that works, but these systemic overgraders must be outed so that new collectors know not to fall into their trap.

    Shoot yourself first!
    I brake for ear bars.
  • I want to thank all you guys for the input, especially Mr. Snow.

I read these adds late at night or to some very early in the morning- and watch the idiots on the SAHTV- and I wonder, especially with the raws- the guys on TV you can see the cleaning and the definite whacks on the coins- that they claim will make buckoo bucks at the TPG's- they disgust me- BUT it is a very informal educational process that I have come to enjoy. Hey not everyday do you see ms63 NGC coins - common grade selling for 75 bucks, when FMV has it near 50.

I am going to do an experiment on one particular date coin in which I already have a set going from au50,58,ms60,63,65,and a 66. Of the ms- they are graded by the HOME team, the au's are anacs- it's an 85-0
I also have 2 85-) in raw- one is going to PCGS, the other is headed to the NCS/NGC boys- it has a spot that I want off before grade. In the meantime I am going to 'buy' one from Mr. Beymer, and one from RC of NH- both of the same date/mm, in raw. If I am fortunate they should, let me paraphrase that SHOULD look the same as for strike/luster/tics-hits. if they do- then I will have faith in 2 dealers, and will do future experiments with them.

I have some money to burn- as my CFO has informed me(this morning) so I get to chose only 2 coins- under 500.

Now is that not a nice CFO to have?

My pic taking skills are terible with the puter- I am going to 'hit' up a freind and see if he can hep me with some shooting.

    Again thank you guys.

BTW- I still have coins to sell on:

    Ditto.

Sent back overdipped slider sets of BTW & WC commems for a refund a few years ago, get a call saying that Mr. Sims decided to send me better coins. They were better (couldn't have been much worse), but not "choice BU" as advertised

    Live and learn.

Just so everyone knows, his son took over, but changed the name, it's now Yesterday's Change. Having purchased a couple dozen BU half eagles from his dad, which were all au and/or cleaned and/or other damage, I can't bring myself to even give the son a chance, especially since he doesn't disavow the dad connection, but promotes it.
