"The Whitman people at the Atlanta Expo do it right". What does this mean?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I've read a few posts or comments by dealers that "the Whitman people at the Atlanta Expo show do it right." Does anyone know what this means? I assume that all of the larger coin shows are about the same. What does Whitman do to make this show a little bit different than all others? What is Whitman doing right, while the other shows might be doing things "less right"? Free rooms, free food, free donuts? What is it?

In general, the promoter makes attending a pleasant and worthwhile experience.

I am going to have to attend one of these in the near future. It sounds like a great chance to spend a lot of quality time with "Dahlonega" without interruption.

By having it less than a mile from my house so I don't have to fight the notorious Atlanta traffic.image

Isn't the ANA in Atlanta in 2006?

World Class Facility w/o the hassles of downtown convention centers - Perimeter hwy access - plenty of free parking - plenty of hotel rooms nearby in all price ranges. Food court in the facility.

    National Dealers in attendance

    ANR/Stack's Auctions

World Class Exhibits - Lots of numismatic authors with book signings

Plenty of help - information booth - NO ADMISSION FEE

Unfortunately as an Atlantan, I can tell you this is not a great coin city. But I do believe if Whitman sticks with it we will see more and more collectors coming from all over, cause this is a great place to have a show.

The Spring ANA will be held at this facility as well.

It's not going to be downtown at the GA World Congress Center? It going to be at the Cobb Gallaria? That is great news for me. It's nice to live in the platinum triangle. image

I still think the show has a lot of potential and as mentioned they are "doing it right" for the most part. I do wonder if it would be better if the show had been held on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday rather than Thursday-Saturday.

I used to live a couple of miles from there when I was at NAS Atlanta. Nice place to live.
  • Out of curiosity is Whitman's headquarters in 30339? For anyone who doesn't know 30339 just look on any can of Coke. Also Home Depot and The Weather Channel are in 30339 just to name a couple of well known companies.

  • The only thing that they did not do right was to allow a rubber chicken access to the bourse floor.

  • BTW, they have a top notch YN program at the show.

Is this where next spring's ANA show is going to be held?

In answer to my own question Whitman's HQ is on Clairmont between 85 and Buford Hwy.
  • The show was awesome! Not even the ANA spends that kind of money on the displays.

Plus, the Whitman store (the books, supplies, etc) was worth attending for.

Should have bought a 100 copies of the not yet released Judd Patterns and flea bayed them for $100,000 a copy as collector items.image

The Whitman operated shows seem to have great organization. Getting the public to attend is another matter.

There are a few large shows that are totally unorganized. When a problem develops, their organizers, instead of being able to solve problems immediately, stand around with a deer-in-the-headlights look on their faces without a prayer of finding a solution. There was one newer large coin show in South Florida that has had this problem. It was due to this reason that I did not attend their last show earlier this year.

I have really enjoyed the Whitman shows thus far - Mary and the rest of the people running them are friendly and responsive, and the Whitman organization is obviously dedicated to advancing the hobby, not just making money. I did quite well last week - while there weren't huge crowds in attendance, it seemed like a fair number of people came to spend money on coins, which was nice; especially when they chose to spend their money on mine. image

I wanted to bump this Longacre Classic™ thread from last year in honor of the upcoming Whitman/Atlanta show. It has some interesting comments.
