what to pay for junk silver?

I am stopping by a peron's house tonight as they called me asking if I would like to buy their bag of silver coins. After talking to them, they have a big bag of silver washington quarters they don't want to keep, and would like to get rid of it. They were going to bring it to the bank to turn in, but contacted me to see if the quarters were worth more.

To be fair, I want to offer them something close to what a dealer would give them. I am thinking 4x face is fair. Is that too low?

What would you pay today for common-date circulate silver quarters (Washington's)?

You'd make some money at that price, but obvisouly 4x more than the bank would pay.

Make sure they are all pre 64 first. May have some other dates mixed in.

I'll buy all the 90% silver bags you can get together at that price. I'll pay you 4.5x face just to make it worth your while.

My dealer offered my son $4.80 per dollar when silver was back at around $7 an ounce. I brought it from him instead.

With silver at $7.47 per ounce, a circulated pre-1965 quarter should be worth about $1.35.

4x face seems fair based on your efforts for this purchase.

  • 4.5x is a fairer price with silver at current levels. Many dealers were offering that at the recent show in Alabama. Silver was $7.11 at the time.
  • If they are friends, 5x face would be more fair, 4x is okay, but on the low side. Wholesale dealers are offering 5.0x face, but that is in quantity and seller pays shipping. Small dealers are probably offering 4x to 4.5x face depending on quantity and type of coins.
