However I would love to see him in left field for the Cubs next year but someone will have to whip that kid into place.

Wanted to make sure I read that correctly...
You proudly berated and taunted him non-stop until he reacted?
Amazing.

Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera got the lecture he claimed he didn't
>>
I find it unblievable that the home town paper doesn't know what position he plays.

Third base is his natural position and has played some there this year, last week he made a lot of nice plays against the Braves playing there.

Is this something unusual? Opposing player are often taunted that doesn't give them the right to react in that fashion.
<< <i>Last time the Marlins came to Chicago I was in the left field bleachers for the night game they played. The whole section was chanting "You suck Cabrera." He actually turned around, grabbed his balls and then flipped us off. I lost all respect for this "professional" at that moment.

'fans' these days are nuts....I mean the players shouldn't have to put up with garbage like that. I know, I know, the argument is going to be 'they get paid so much money!' but it's still garbage.
Hey, I agree ballplayers should (and need) to generally have thicker skin and be able to tolarate more than most people. But to essentially say - we chanted and harrassed him all night long until he finally acknowledged us and flipped us off, the player's a jerk - is a bit of a stretch.
<< <i>All I'm saying is if you repeatedly whip an angry dog, don't blame him if he finally bites you. >>
Good point. But I do think it comes with the territory and you have to just ignore it - you have to be a professional. People get stuff thrown at them at don't react in this manner, but then again flipping off the fans is not as big of taboo as would have been 10-15 years ago.
Players are and should be PROFESSIONALS. They are not dogs being whipped. They should not react to the crowd like this ever. As a clearifier I was sitting in an entire section, 300 people chanting this. You don't see basketball players flipping off the section behind the basket because they are screaming when they are shooting free throws do you? Of course not. This was a classless act by a immature millionaire. There were women and children present and just because someone(s) yelling at a PROFESSIONAL ball player does not give him the right in any manner to explicitally justure to the crowd.
Play devil's advocate all you like, or if you truely believe he had the right to do so we are of completely different moral beliefs. Do you think it was acceptable for the Pacers to go into the stands and start punching people? But they were provoked...
I am not buying it. If you were standing with your boss and customers(which fans essentially are) were telling you haw you messed up would you tell them to fcuk off? Of course not. So why is it OK for Miguel to respond in a similar manner?

You realize I hope, that you're making my point with every post you make...
So there were "women and children present" as the "entire section, 300 people" taunted him with "You suck Cabrera"... until he could take it no more and responded with a "Classless act by a immature millionaire"... Sure, maybe... but classless act by immature fans as well? How much should he take? Certainly there has to be a limit, right? Who defines that limit?
Acceptable for the Pacers going in to the stands? - No, of course not. Nor is it even in the same ballpark as this discussion.
Fact that Cabrera or any other player, in addition to being PROFESSIONAL, is also a HUMAN BEING. - Completely lost on you, apparently.
I think it's rather elitist of you (as an example, but referring to most fans in general) to appoint yourself as the one who gets to decide who has the right to do what when it comes to acceptable player reactions to things like this. The ticket you pay for buys you a seat. Contrary to your opinion, it does not also buy the RIGHT to berate and taunt and provoke players until they reach their breaking point. And on top of that, you assert the right to define that breaking point yourself, and dismiss the player as a classless millionaire when the fans push him over that point.
And finally, Jim Rice was justified when he went in to the stands in Yankee stadium to fight with a fan who stole his hat.

Some other things that may not be appropriate on this forum but they were words you hear on regular TV
And just to clarify, we were all standing in the bar section (21+ only) in center field.
He took it like a man and even tipped his cap a few times when one of us had a clever chant.
I'm just trying to put some perspective around the 1% of the time when one of them can't contain it anymore. I just think it's overreacting and unfair to demonize the guy in this case. Young kid, couldn't take it anymore etc. And the fans do have some responsibility.
That said, some parks are going to far to enforce that responsibility. Namely Fenway. They have an official "Fenway code of conduct" that is read over the PA before each game. "Fenway fans do not use bad language. Fenway fans sit only in their assigned seats. Fenway fans do not..." They even have a hotline that you're encouraged to call if another fan is "intruding on your Fenway experience and breaking the code of conduct". Seriously.
Anyways, I once got kicked out of Fenway for chanting "Raul sucks s***" repeatedly, loudly (drunkenly), at Raul Mondesi in RF when he came in with the Blue Jays. Apparently it was a "family night" game and the moms and dads around us were none too pleased with the profanity. But had he flipped me off, I think he would've been justified...
You are sitting in your cubicle, on the phone with a client, while 200 people on same floor are shouting "YOU SUCK!" while drinking beers and tossing things at you...you're going to say you would sit there and take it?
Come on now, I think you know you and I both would respond the same way.

I can vouch for this. When I went to the WS last year, the first thing my buddy did was instruct me on proper language. I laughed it off and he looked me in the eye and said, "I'm dead serious. You don't want to get kicked out, do you?"
Around the 3rd inning or so (2 beeahs at a time will do that, ya know), I got up and went to the restroom. Someone standing in line yelled, "What the f?!?! This line sucks a!" Everyone looked at him and yelled, in unison, "HEY! Watch your mouth!"
When he finished up, he was pointed out to the security and he was promptly escorted out of the stadium.
Glad my buddy forewarned me
The malice at the palace, where the pacers and pistons went at it? Does anyone think the fans would have been that unruly had they been sober?
That being said, I don't think it's all that terrible for these players to let these fans have it once in a while...as it's certain they have it coming. I'm not sure how you can say 'we were really tearing into this guy...calling him names up and down, insulting his family, etc.' and then 'can you believe it? he flipped us off and grabbed his crotch! The nerve of that guy!'
Let's also not forget it's the end of the season, he's been through this on the road what, 80 times already? Does he really need to go out and hear 'you suck!' from 300+ people, again?
