This little holey 1776 Mexico City half real was my first detector find from the 1700s. It was found near the site of General James Oglethorpe’s villa on Saint Simons Island, GA. Oglethorpe was the founder of the colony of Georgia.
The next morning I went back to the same site and dug an even nicer (unholed) 1787, just a few feet away.
Oglethorpe died in 1785 after returning to England, so he wasn’t the one who dropped those two half-reals. They more likely date to a later plantation on the site.
