Clemens mother passes and he's still taking the ball tonight

I hope he does well, I can't imagine the emotions trying to pitch a great game in her honor. Wonder what this will do to him returning next year? I know he said one of the reasons he really wanted to leave the game is so she good be there for his HOF induction.

  • Hmmm -- now he might go for 400 wins -- and I think he has a good shot at doing it!!!

His mom was quite a lady and was tough as nails. God bless her.

Tonight, he'll probably be breathing fire and push to win the game no matter what. He is already hurt as it is. I just hope he doesn't forget that he's still a 43 yr old man and doesn't drive himself like he was a 23 year old. I'm sure getting hurt further and being placed on the DL is not what his mother would have wanted him to do.

Amazing performance by Clemens tonight. I can't imagine how tough it must have been for him to pitch tonight, but not only did he pitch - he pitched 6+ strong innings. This reminded me of Favre a few years back, throwing those TD's on Monday Night after his fathers passing.

That's what it reminded me of too, glad to see him dominate tonight, and his team-mates actually got him runs too.

  • It reminded me of when Paul O'Neill played in the 1999 World Series right after his father had passed away.

Kudos to Clemens. His record has nothing to do with his dominating pitching this year. If he was on the Cards he would have 30 wins by now. I
know others have more wins, but dang, how can you NOT put this guy in the cy young conversation?? He lost 4 games when he didn't even
give up a run in any of those games.

The Astros have been shut out 7 games in which Clemens has pitched... PATHETIC.

I watched his post-game conference and to be honest, it was very moving. I wouldn't be surprised if the 'Stros used this as motivation and become overachivers again.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

I saw it too - and thought the same thing. They may have a sporadic offense, but who's better than Clemens, Pettite, and Oswalt right now as a playoff rotation? I'd love to see the Astros in the WS representing the NL.

Can you imagine Clemens coming back to Fenway to pitch against the Sox in a WS game. He'd be pumped up for that, no doubt.

  • I witnesses about 100 Red Sox games where Clemens left and Jeff Reardon came in to blow the game, or the sox were shut out. This guy should have 500 wins

Those years on Boston in which he has 10 or more losses, he still had a wicked low ERA (except 1993) for the American League. After 1988, he was on some sorry Red Sox teams. Overall, probably should have 30 or so more wins with decent run support, not including this year. This year he should have 10 more wins with just average run support!!

Still not as bad as the year Nolan Ryan had the lowest ERA in the league and finished with an 8-16 record!!

Of course, Phil Niekro would have had 80 more wins if the Braves were as good then as they are now!!!

I think it should be noted that Clemens' last year with the Red Sox was a much better year than what the stats indicate. Anyone who thought he was already washed up and in the "twilight of his career" should consider this. Clemens led the league in strikeouts in '96 and was also near the top (if not the leader) in innings pitched. The Red Sox provided horrible run support for him that year as well as being a team that was not very impressive defensely. This was also the year in which he had that really dominating stretch towards the end of the season and struck out 20 batters in a game for the second time in his career.

Current season = great ERA. Shows up, despite adversity.
Lifetime = great stats. It's his pitching, not his teams.
Clemens = unreal dude...last of the era...enjoy it while you can. You will NEVER see it again.

    Regards.....
