    The Chargers should have won the game, but absolutely STUPID penalties by the defense on 3rd downs, and horrendous play calling by Schittenheimer on that last series of downs cost the Chargers the game.

    You've got first and goal, with the best running back in the league, and you call all passes into the end zone...ABSOLUTELY FRIGGIN' STUPID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I have to agree also! thats why marty never wins big games. hes an idiot. lt could of easyily turned a corner on 2nd or 3rd down. but hey good game! chargers will be in the playoffs this year. i didnt want to say cowboys were better this year but now i am convinced. they are a playoff team!! WHAT A GAME!

    The Rams seemed to win a super bowl with little talent on defense...or have you forgotten that?

    Actually Axtell, JoeS' comment about no defense = no rings is generally true. The greatest offense usually gets quieted down a bit in the post-season.

    I always go back to the Chargers "Air Coryell" days of 1979-82. No team had a better offense. The Chargers would score 48 points, and give up 45 during the regular season. They won the games. Then in the playoffs, they'd still give up 45, but the offense would be held to 41...they'd lose.

    The Rams during their Super Bowl seasons, IMHO, were the exception to the rule.

    The Chargers would've made it to the Super Bowl if they didn't have to play in that terrible weather in Cinncinati , i believe 82 was the year but i could be wrong.

    I'll never forget watching that game. It must have been 10 below

    This whole Sunday was some of the worst opening day quality of football I can remember. Mistakes, penalties, poor coaching, etc. But tomorrow night you guys will be priviledged to get to see what a championship caliber NFL football team looks like in the form of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are the NFC champs and will be again...all these other NFC teams are playing for the silver medal. The only question remaining about the Eagles is by how many touchdowns are they going to win the Super Bowl?... might be two, might be three.

    Very true...that game was the week after the 41-38 overtime win in Miami in January of 1982. The Chargers went into Cincinnati and lost 21-7 I think, in -59 degree weather.

    I'd like to make a motion that unless you're team has actually won a super bowl, you can't talk about how you are going to do it.

    You don't get to talk trash about winning the super bowl if you've never won it.



    And yes, I agree that you typically need a defense to win super bowls is accurate...but it can be done (and when you make stupid, blanket statements like 'no defense=no rings' just asks you to be ridiculed).

    The Marino-era Dolphins remind of me teams that were built around offense, but never could get the deal done.

    The eagles will not even be NFC East Champs anymore let alone Superbowl Champs. Just toliet bowl champs because they are sh#t! Not a bad first game. The Defense will only get better. Watch out here comes the Cowboys!!!!

    Held the best back and most peoples choice as #1 pick in fantasy drafts to 72 yards on 19 carries

    This is a very young but talented defense, they will only get better as the season continues

    Ax, they may have not been the Ravens but that was an above average defense. They allowed the fourth fewest points in the league.


    As for the Cowboy defense it should also be pretty good. They had one of the better defenses two years ago, and now with better corners allowing Williams to do what he does best (play near the line) and switching to a 3-4 they should be pretty good again.
