Everyone seems to think ANACS is better than ICG, and I am not saying I disagree. Can someone please explain why on the greysheet ICG has a higher % almost in line with NGC and PCGS? What does the % mean exactly?

Don't believe everything you read. image Go to a coin show with an MS-65 generic Morgan and MS-64 generic Saint from the three companies and take offers from several potential buyers and report your findings back to us.

ICG is a tough one. In grades at and below, say, MS-63 I'll take them straight up compared to any other grading service. ICG seems more willing to call a choice slider AU-58 whereas the others may give then an MS-62 grade.

And in circulated grades, ICG is every bit as conservative as the others, from what I've seen.

Yes, they begin to break down at and above MS-65. But below 63 or so, I think ICG plastic is as good as any. So is ANACS, for that matter. And ANACS is notoriously brutal on modern submissions. So really, there are a number of sub-markets in play here which may have different answers.

I've wondered this for years. No one could ever answer me on it. I think it's the percent in which coins graded by those particular services match the greysheets prices per the grade? But it could go both ways. If a PCGS coin sells for more than sheet than the % would be lower just like if an acg coin sold for lower than sheet.

Who the hell knows? If anyone does can you tell us PLEASE.

Those percentages almost certainly do not reflect reality. I can only guess is that the sample of coins they survey is not representative of the overall coin market, or the pricing info in the sample is flawed.

In reality, all other things being equal, ANACS is #3 and ICG is #4 from what I have seen, in terms of realtive pricing for the same grade.

You asked for opinions. Opinions given. Those numbers/% mean nothing to a lot of people.

Edited to add my opinion: PCGS/NGC tie, ANACS/ICG tie. Others, don't know and don't really care, although you might find a nice coin in their slabs once in a blue moon.

For US coins... depends on the series and the mint.

For World coins... depends on the country and monarch

Sorry, but it is not a simple question and there is not enough space to consider the all the positive and negatives of TPG SERVICES. Don't forget the most important part... the so-called guarantees.

I think NGC is best when it comes to toned coins, mostly because of their star designation. PCGS is the best, I think, overall. I know that an NGC 67 Lincoln will usually only make 66 at PCGS. I have never owned any coins graded by the other companies.

For marketability I say it is PCGS. Consistency in grading along with NGC is pretty close, but both camps have put a hell of a lot of dogs in plastic holders. I have found some ANACS graded coins that were undergraded including this 1905 Barber half that was ANACS F12 and is now a PCGS VF30, but it is a Tyler Child VF20. image

I too have often wondered why the big discount % for ANACS in greysheet. Like Dukie commented, I think the amount of net graded coins might account for the % difference for ANACS slabbed material..

Of the big three, they each fall short in certain series.
