Just Picked Up My First Pattern ... a Trade Dollar :-)

1873 Trade Judd 1293 ANACS PR64 from Heritage. What is the general thought re sending to NCS for a bath??? Does it wreck the coin?

Don't do it! Ask TDN. Only send coins with serious flaws, not a beautiful old pattern like that. A dealer might dip it to get it to PR65 and increase the plastic value, but why chance ruining a coin for future generations?

If you want an off-white coin and don't mind a downgrade, go for it.

I'm curious as to how you think it may benefit from being stripped.

I was considering it because I thought that it might show off the details of the coin better. Don't get me wrong ... I love toning and have some spectacularly toned Morgans in my collection. But this one just seems to have a little extra "crud' on it. And, since it is a pattern, I would really like to see the differences between this coin and those that were actually put in to circulation. I have never sent a coin to NCS before and just wanted some opinions.

I've sent four coins to NCS, none of which was a PF, however. One had bad dip residue on it and it came back bright white, though I don't believe it actually matched the blasty nature of an original piece. This may have been because the dip and subsequent dip residue had already damaged the surface. The other three were Morgan dollars sent in for a friend of mine where they removed some sort of PVC from one coin and it improved; they removed some splotchy toning from another coin; and they refused to dip a third Morgan because they thought it would hurt the eye appeal. Overall they do what they do very well, but I don't know that every coin is a candidate for their services.

I have to ask - why would you buy a coin that you're not happy with as it is?

I do like it ... but I also think that it could be better. It is such a rare issue, that I'll take what I can get. I have decided, however, to leave it as is ... and admire the crud :-)
  • After looking at the NCS website gallery (great link) I'd have to say that 9 out of 10 coins there looked better before being "conserved." Furthermore, some of the "after" photos look like completely different coins - literally. Take this for example:
    imageimage

In image one Liberty appears to be frowning a bit and somewhat melancholy. In image two she seems to be saying: "I'm soooooooo happy I've been dipped!" Actually look at the mouth and eyes. The coin appears to have changed beyond what a dip could do.

  • I wouldn't have bought it because it's too darkly toned. I suppose you could send it to NGC and see if they think they can at least clean up the dirt on it--I don't like dip-jobs, but that ones pretty fugly. If you do "conserve", leave it to the pros and take the $ insurance too.
