Home Buy, Sell, & Trade - U.S. Coins

I think I've been had,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

In late July I got a PM from a Board Member wanting to buy (2) coins I had for sale. We agreed on a price and he said he would mail payment ASAP. After (2) weeks and no payment I PM'd him asking status. He said he mailed it the next day. I asked him if he could see if the check or money order had been cashed. He said he sent cash.

It was at that point I asked if I could ask how old he was? When he told me he was only 16 I felt bad about a YN losing $30 so I aked him (2) things.

#1 - PROMISE me you mailed me $30 cash?
#2 - PROMISE me you will never send cash to anyone again?

He said yes to both SO,,,,,,, I said I would send him the coins anyway & I did. He received the coins a few days later and PM'd me. He said that HE felt really bad about my sending him the coins and not getting paid for them so he said he was sending the payment again.

GUESS WHAT??? Over 15 days has passed and still none of the payments have showed up.

Now it's only $30 and it's not going to kill me BUT,,,,,,, I HATE being had!!!!!!!

Has anyone had a similiar experience? If so PM me and we will compare notes.

Thanks, GrandAm imageimageimageimageimage

Not the same but I had a sinilar bad experience with a guy in Canada. He Ebay'd "2 gold sovereigns" which I won for a $100. They arrived and turned out to be tokens. When I went back to him, he was offended and had me send them back. Since it was Canada, the USPS doesn't do certain things so I went bareback. Pennywise and pound foolish. Now no money, no tokens, and no him. A lesson. Set the terms and insure everything.image

I agree. I've dealt with one 16 year old recently and everything worked out great so I don't think we should avoid transactions with all YN's.

Over 15 days has passed and still none of the payments have showed up.......

Have you PM'ed to confirm second payment was sent?
Remember, if he is 16, summer is ending; school starting; maybe a last family vacation; etc.
Sometimes it takes another reminder......and how was payment being sent since he promised you no more cash?

He said that HE felt really bad about my sending him the coins and not getting paid for them so he said he was sending the payment again.......

OK, so you sent him the coins without expecting compensation other than the promises........he felt bad, and was going to send you payment.
It's probably hard to put yourself in the mindframe of NOT expecting payment, but if you do get it that would be a windfall.

Whether or not the relationship with this youth is ruined is up to the YN. (If you're reading this I would make sure payment get to GA)

I had a Y/N not send me payment for a couple of coins sent out.

When I looked back at my message to him/her, I saw how he/she could have gotten the impression I wasn't expecting payment (my wording wasn't the best), so I wrote it off. It was maybe a $10-$15 transaction.

If kids want to play in the big boys world they should be treated like big boys. A couple more PM's and a week or so wait and then out the person if the problem does not clear up. Forget promises judge only by immediate action from the person.

I had pity a couple of years ago and did not out a person here. He took a bunch of people later on.

Its a shame...as a YN myself, I have dealt with many other YN, and adults on a few high transactions (high for a youngin'), and never seemed to have had a problem. A few miscommunications, but thats too be expected...image
  • Do let us know his [nickname] I received a post from someone stating he was a YN and would I send him my posted IHC so he could ''inspect it'' first? Im not judgemental of no-one unless I have a clear reason but I would hate to see myself or anyone on this forum be defrauded by anyone... If this YN is on the up & up he will reply as to why either of the 2 payments of $30cash ea. never showed? Hopefully no-one has to be subjected to this inappropriate behaviorimage

    Hi guys,

I got home late this evening after posting this thread this afternoon before I left. I had (12) PM'S on this and 23 posts. The most PM'S & post's to any thread I have done in the shortest amount of time.

The main reason I even posted this was to see if anyone else had been told a similar story by the same YN. Nobody named the same kid as having stiffed them so I am going to give the kid the benefit of the doubt and not post his name. I did however receive (2) PM"S from the kid and I will post them so everyone can read his explanation.

    Here they are:

    "Gary,

Please do not post my name. I am truly sorry for the inconvienance I have caused you. I am sending the coins tomorrow and I am going to reinburse you the money you spent shipping them. Again, I am very sorry. I have some things going on in my life right now that are putting me under a lot of pressure. I really did send the first payment. I made a huge mistake by forgetting to send the money again when I said I would. No, you have not been "had". There has just been a string of bad things happening. The post office lost my money and would not pay me back and I got in trouble with my Mom because of the money, I had a terrible thing happen to me recently that I prefer not to say. Why didnt you PM me again? Why did you post the story for everyone to see? If you had PMed me to remind me I would have just sent you the coins. I said that I would send the coins. I dont think that is fair. Would you rather have me send you the money or send you the coins? Again, I am truly sorry for this whole situation.

    "Gary,

I saw your thread in the BST forum. I am sorry you never got your money. My mom found out that I was buying coins online and got really mad at me. She told me that I was not allowed to send the money. I am sorry I didnt inform you. This may sound stupid, but I kind of forgot. I will be sending you the coins back on Monday.

    Sorry,

    "name deleted"

Well, there is his explanation. I guess it is my fault because we only had (31) PM'S between us concerning this deal before I made the post about "being had" I gues I should have sent a dozen or 2 dozen more PM'S.

    Thanks for everyone's input!!!!!!

    Strongly agree.

In fact, YNs and former YNs (Kyle Knapp and Jeremy Katz, come to mind) are already well respected market participants. If Kyle Knapp's Mom wont let him buy and sell coins, she's going to be REALLY mad when she finds out!!! image

    Just a clarification question . . .

I don't know if you are talking about naming his real name or his CU handle. I would recommend posting his CU handle.

I also agree with others, he PM'd you two conflicting versions of what happened. If he can't be mature enough to tell the truth about a relatively small thing like this, we need to know.

I agree, but keep in mind that a lot of folks bend over backwards for YNs here. It's possible that a few may develop an entitlement mentality or act as though everyone will cut them slack because they're a YN. I don't think most of the other YNs like the cloud of suspicion this thread is hanging over them, either.

GA, & the YN if you are reading.....

I TOTALLY agree with the YN, things happen in our lives that get in the way of logical thinking, at times I think I have A.D.D. (or worse!)

This seems simple enough, since the mother is all huffy about this, have her go online & print out a PRIORITY shipping label w/Delivery Confirmation (D.C. is free); without postage. Cost should be $3.85, cheap enough to save her son's rep. Once the package is dropped off at the P.O. (adding the appropriate postage), the tracking number can be PM'ed to GA.

He will then have confirmation (online) that the coins are coming back.

We all, at least the one that will admit it, make mistakes....there are times in our lives where days whizz by.

YN, you have a slight chance of making this right, DON'T BLOW IT. I would go out to the P.O. TODAY & straighten this out.

    Again, JMO

    Look guys,

When I started this thread I did so so find out if this person had done the same thing to anyone else. It appears that he HAS NOT!

I never intended for this to be a SLAM on all YN. I really think the kid just got in the caught in the middle between me, himself and his Mother. When MOM found out he was buying coins she said no and it just got out of hand from there. He has promised to return the coins. The only way I will post his ID is if the coins fail to return.

The heck of it is he could have kept them and I wouldn't have had a problem with that if he hadn't promised to send the 2nd payment that never showed up! That is when I began to think something was fishy.

I think he has learned his leason and it won't happen again. I DON"T want to ruin a 16 yr old kid for a $30 mistake.

Let this thread die a peaceful death.

I can tell you one thing, if a certain YN I know pulled a stunt like that, it'd be the last post/transaction/etc. he did on the forum for a l-o-n-g time...after a public apology post that is.

It's like the old story of breaking your neighbor's window with a baseball. Fessing up and making it right gets you a better reputation with your neighbor than trying to keep it a secret. It's not easy, fun or comfortable. As a matter of fact it's probably the hardest thing you have to do, BUT it pays both personally and publicly in the long run. Reputations are hard to build but easy to lose.

The heck of it is he could have kept them and I wouldn't have had a problem with that if he hadn't promised to send the 2nd payment that never showed up!

Then why did you not tell this YN, when he offered to pay you the second time, "No need to, you have paid for them by promising me that you did pay & to never to pay by cash." End of story!

You laid the dirty laudery out....you think you've been had, yet you won't name names......now you feel sorry for the YN & want this to all end!

Don't tell me this was all a way to put indirect pressure on the kid to pay or send the coin back?

Ditto,I was kinda wondering why Grandam posted this thread in the first place as he made it seem that he was just giving the kid the coins as a sort of gift to help ease the pain of losing money due to postal service carelessness.Seem like a bit of backbiting hypocrisy to have posted this thread,IMHO...

  • To all forum members:

I just wanted to let everyone know that Grandam has not been "had". I am the YN that has got himself into this bad situation. I never lied about sending the money in the first place. I really did send the $30. I put cash in an envelope and then put that envelope in another envelope. I thought it would be safe this way. I have learned my lesson to never send cash again. When I received the coins I felt bad about him not getting the money and I told him that I would send him the money again. My Mom was snooping through my computer that day while I was at Football practice and found out I hade been buying coins. She said that I wasnt allowed to send the money and she grounded me. After a few days I forgot about sending the money for a second time. That was my second mistake that I am very sorry for. I have already lost $30 out of this deal so I think that I have been "had" by the PO for losing or letting my letter be stolen. I told Grandam that I am sending the coins back to him and I am reinbursing the money he spent on shipping for the coins. I still dont understand why he couldnt just PM me to remind me rather that making this a public thing. I am sorry for the post office losing my original payment and I am sorry for getting in trouble with my mom and I am sorry for forgeting to send the money a second time. I am truly sorry about this whole situation.

    Sincerely,
    Greg Betz (DickyBetz)
